Assuming the chassis is in good condition they could do another 20+ years if Porterbrook did a '321 Renatus' style project on them. And good riddance to the Northern 319s. Far beyond their sell by date. Ridiculously low seats, cramped interior, malfunctioning doors and dreadful acceleration.

Won't be sorry to see these hand-me-downs finally go. The seat heights were the most annoying bit. Don't mind the 323s. The 331 ride quality isn't great but the interior/fit-out (lower window heights, tables, space around doors etc) is a monumental improvement on the cramped 1990s BR stock.

No, on the basis many of the revenue inspectors (i.e. sub-contractors) are not adequately trained in giving out large on-the-spot fines and are not in a position to be fair due to commission. The idea is fine but the execution by the TOCs is flawed.
