[CA] Alsthom will deliver 313 rail cars to Via Rail

I don’t see any DMU’s listed on the order - are they not being replaced?

Paddington-Reading blocked due to OLE isolation and lineside fire (5/9)

Line now closed again due to a bridge strike.

[CA] Alsthom will deliver 313 rail cars to Via Rail

Is there any word on replacing the few Budd railcars that still run?

Why doesn't North America have train sheds / pleasant platforms?

1788622611 Thanks, yes that was exactly my point! I’m sadly very familiar with the later ‘Amshack’ stations, though in recent years there have been some notable improvements such as the new Rochester NY building (though take a look at the original one and weep at what was lost). Quote Reply...

Eurailpass becomes Interrail from 9 September 2026

    Makes perfect sense to me.

    GWR First Class (plus Pullman)

From experience the crew of the up lunchtime train from Devon won't ever extend it into the adjoining coach, I've been turned away on multiple occasions.

Why doesn't North America have train sheds / pleasant platforms?

That's true but I meant more the interiors.

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

Seemed to run at a normal speed past the incident site but there is a speed restriction on the up line after Plumpton.

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

Trains seem to be operating relatively normally today albeit with some delays due to speed restrictions - I don't know whether that is on the reopened line or elsewhere.

Severn Valley Railway to trial commuter services

How to doom a trial to fail…

    GWR First Class (plus Pullman)

Just booked onto the Pullman from Exeter in a few weeks time - surprised to see only 5 places left this far out!

Why doesn't North America have train sheds / pleasant platforms?

It always strikes me that the design of US commuter rail is basically stuck in the 1950's.

    Croatian Sleeper

Thanks both, will keep checking! Oddly trainline doesn't seem to offer any availability for this service at all, but OBB does on other dates.

    Croatian Sleeper

22 Nov but was also not available on OBB.

    Croatian Sleeper

I've been trying to plan a trip to Zagreb using the sleeper from Stuttgart but neither the trainline or OBB seems to be able to sell me a ticket - does anyone know what's going on with it?

East-West Rail (EWR) countdown to entry into service

Probably because they have an eye on costs for which they're now wholly responsible for?

Why doesn't North America have train sheds / pleasant platforms?

You may well be right but...the waiting area in DC is definitely not in the nice bit! It's just the deep contrast that seems odd to me. Even an airbridge is well kept, its not exposed concrete, puddles and so on.

Why doesn't North America have train sheds / pleasant platforms?

Returning to the original topic, I was just posting pics from my trip online and these neatly illustrate my point. I find it hard to imagine that the platforms were this dismal originally when so much money was evidently spent on the rest of Washington DC’s Union station.
