    Dinting - Hadfield

Thanks - that makes sense about the reduced peak service (now half hourly, same as off peak).

    Dinting - Hadfield

Thanks. I've only ever done DTG-HDF direct once and that was on the last train out of MAN one night, so didn't get to see much for the full effect! 1787933028 I might be wrong, but I think at one time (40+ years ago) there was no Sunday service at all on the line.

    Dinting - Hadfield

And the first service (SuX) at 0532 from MAN.

Trivia: Most delayed train to ever complete its service

Not in the UK, but in the mid 1980s I was on the California Zephyr from Chicago to Denver which had a series of delays, including the loco catching fire and being replaced by a freight engine. We trundled across the plains and got to Denver well over 6 hours down.

    Dinting - Hadfield

There are only very few trains that run direct from Dinting to Hadfield and then on to Glossop on their journey from Manchester (and none at all in the MAN bound direction). I think it's now just the first trains from MAN (every day) and the last train from there (except Sunday). Didn't there...

Not a good spell for Southern

Southern have had a run of bad luck - the Lewes derailment, a landslip between Polegate and Eastbourne suspending trains on that route and now a track inspection suspending services for the rest of the day on the Uckfield Line south of Hurst Green (and as a knock-on no Spa Valley trains between...

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

Surprised RTT shows the train as having arrived at Lewes 25 late (as the news broke yesterday it was showing it showing as leaving Lewes 27 late, which made me think initially yesterday that the derailment was after Lewes).

Alleged "floating" railway line at Ryde

The potential mistiming hadn't occurred to me when I read the article when it was first published. It's either that or just sloppy journalism. There is no attempt by the writer to explain the technical aspect of a floating railway.

Did a anyone use the Ongar service when it was operated by London Underground?

No, it was timetabled. I guess to maximise ùse of the rolling stock and train crew.

Did a anyone use the Ongar service when it was operated by London Underground?

At one time, I think the heritage line proposed to build a platform for their trains this side of the crossover and a have a walkway from there to the Central Line platforms. With a six-minute off peak service at Epping, I suspect TfL wouldn't be willing to give up one of their platforms entirely.

Rural and/or unusual places on the Underground to visit

Amersham is worth a trip, if just to see how rural the Underground can get - you could combine that with a trip to Chesham. Completely different but definitely quirky, get a Northern Line (Charing Cross branch) train that is terminating at Kennington, stay on it at Kennington and have a ride...

Did a anyone use the Ongar service when it was operated by London Underground?

Miraculously, I was right about some trains only going as far as North Weald. This is such a train leaving Epping on 28 December 1989. Again, click the image for the best view. As an aside, I managed an illicit cab ride on the Aldwych branch not long before closure thanks to a kind driver. He...

Did a anyone use the Ongar service when it was operated by London Underground?

Yes - December 1989, when it ran all day. If I remember correctly, some trains then only ran from Epping - North Weald, before going back to Epping and then going to Ongar. There were very few people using it then. Attached is a pic of Ongar with a very careworn train - click on the image to...

    Signal at Tunbridge Wells

Don't think so. During the period from Grove Junction going and the siding being installed (several years) there was no feather. 1725194552 Thanks - interesting read. As an aside, I can't imagine the unaffected carriages of a train involved in a major derailment would be allowed to carry on to...

    Signal at Tunbridge Wells

The signal at the south end of [the traditional down] platform 2 at Tunbridge Wells [Central] has long struck me as unusual. There are two routes available at this signal: 1. Into the turnback siding just beyond the station 2. On to the single-line track towards Hastings (when the "feather"...

Is a fast service from Ashford via Tonbridge needed as well as HS1?

I was commuting from TW - CHX daily in 2008 albeit at peak times, and I'm pretty sure the off peaks to Hastings from CHX then were at xx15 and xx45. No doubt my memory is playing tricks but I don't recall the shuttle from Tonbridge to Tunbridge Wells at all then. The days of the old fasts from...

Southern Advance - specified train not shown

It does. 1718137425 Southern's website, but collected at Enfield Chase. Some years ago I had trouble with collecting tickets from a Southeastern machine that were ordered via Chiltern (only some of the coupons printed), so maybe different TOCs being involved is a factor.

Southern Advance - specified train not shown

No-just the tickets themselves printed, plus a receipt. 1718135714 No - 2 Advance Singles.

Southern Advance - specified train not shown

A friend has just collected an Advance ticket (ordered online) for a return journey entirely on Southern trains. Although the ticket has the usual "valid on specified trains only" message on it, the times of the trains involved aren't shown anywhere. Seems strange - haven't seen the actual...

    Starting bell signals

And on Sprinters (and other "modern" units) the guard closes his door before giving the start signal and would probably be unaware of an incident such as the one you saw - on first generation units, the guard would have been standing at his open door when giving the start signal, with a full...
