    Main line balloon loops

A number across the USA near major long-distance terminals, given the one-way setting of rakes of stock, to turn trains around. An alternative is a "wye", a triangle of track to one side of the main line specifically for turning trains around. Possibly the most visible Balloon is the one around...

    Class 120 DMUs

That was a real bit of salesmanship, the cars were withdrawn in May 1971 when the push-pull 2x27 took over the service, and never worked again, being regarded as worn out by 15 years of high speed (for a dmu) running. The rest of the fleet were still in Polmadie sidings at the start of 1974...

    Films that feature the railways

Bit lacking in continuity - opening shot hauled by a WR King, has ticket inspected in a main line compartment, but then arrives behind an LMS 4-4-0 and steps out of a BR non-corridor coach.

    Class 120 DMUs

The WR was more consistent with their formations than others, and many of the sets were still with the cars they were delivered with 20 years or more later, whereas other regions regarded them more as loose vehicles. There was some swapping around of trailers with associated pairs of power cars...

    TfL Young Visitor Discount

What are the actual conditions of the Young Visitor discount added to an Oyster card (seemingly only valid for 14 days), which gives half price travel (alias child fare). We have heard this week from separate gateline staff: - "We don't do those any more". - "We're too busy to do that". - "It's...

    Class 120 DMUs

They weren't actually used as such on mainstream routes, but the 2-cars were run on minor lines not needing three cars. Taunton to Barnstaple was one, it needed three sets, used (inefficiently) all day, whereas the Minehead line which was used much more had 3-car sets, interworked with the local...

Former railway stations on closed beeching lines moved and rebuilt on current preserved heritage lines.

Didn't the current footbridge at Alresford also come from North Tawton in Devon?

    Holborn escalator speed

I was given to believe that's intentional, to avoid the hazardous overloading of the inadequate lower ticket hall that used to happen, especially if several main line services arrive close together. It causes the congestion to be back up at ground level joining the single escalator, which...

Death rate at British Rail vs Coal Board in the 1980s

I am always surprised by the antipathy to locomotives with nose ends, especially when you review the many photographs on the web of Class 47 or Class 25 with completely crushed cabs. In contrast I don't believe a Deltic ever had a cab fatality.

Passports, long names and booking flights

Another was not allowing capitals in the middle of an entry, thus McAlpine not allowed as such.

Passports, long names and booking flights

I worked with an old IT system which wouldn't allow apostrophes within text fields, as this impacted some special character handling. Then it got sold in Ireland, where about 33% of names have apostrophes in them,

Passports, long names and booking flights

Common in the Far East, especially Indonesia. A greater challenge is people with dual nationality, and thus two passports, with different names in each, needed for entry to the respective countries when going from one to the other, matching with return tickets with provision for only one name.

    Films that feature the railways

Caught on a Train is currently here. However the DVD is worth seeking out, as it also has separately a full length commentary over it by writer Stephen Poliakoff and the director about how they filmed it.

    Class 120 DMUs

We discussed this before, unlike other BR Regions every build of dmu for the WR (BR Derby, Gloucester, Pressed Steel, Birmingham RCW) was specified with the Derby cab (which I believe were actually built at Derby and supplied to the contractors) apart from the WR's own build at Swindon. They...

    Hall Class 7904 Fountains Hall

This is sometimes suggested as CME Charles Collett's joke on the railway's upper management following some rather arrogant instructions handed down, that the directors didn't understand what was being built. The Dukedogs were being presented in the accounts as "new", for the purposes of...

    Holborn escalator speed

The escalator at Waterloo from the Jubilee ticket hall up to the main station concourse has always been desperately slow; I wonder why.

Metropolitian line and Beeching: what might have happened?

If carried out, this would have later had a considerable impact on both Crossrail and HS2.

Sadiq Khan says future of Heathrow Express should be ‘reconsidered’ due to Elizabeth line success

I've certainly stood on the Express, when the Piccadilly Line was closed. I wonder what the guarantee is.

Trivia: Where tracks from traditional UK tramways still exist

They were still there in the mid-1980s when I first came to London, and in the absence of shops at Canary Wharf, we used to go via the ferry to Woolwich market on Saturdays, and I always used to deliberately stand on the tracks :)

    DLR B23 Stock (CAF Inneo)

I'm pretty sure one of the initial claimed attributes of the new trains was to overcome hunting. It's not quite right to say you can't defy physics, as the current stock was notably improved, I believe when the wheel profiles were changed. Coasting downhill on curves has previously been an issue...
