Building work on Platform 1 extension looks complete, but not yet 'open' (as of Wednesday) Platform 2 building work not complete but is still ongoing.

Work due to restart this month. Apparently delay was due to if the new Parkside development was going to have rail access, the down platform could have fouled the trackwork. Network Rail have since stated that would not be the case, even if rail connection is made in the future.

Despite being started months ago, both platform extensions to the east of the station appear to have stalled. The platform edges have been completed, but the actual platform tops are unfinished, and are therefore still out of use. Has anyone any idea as to the cause of delay? Many Thanks

I'm sure that was the reason behind the car sharing, which was thankfully improved once the new car park was opened. However, it's still difficult to find a space after 8:00 am. I think some sharing is still going on to some lesser degree, judging by the number of cars still parked at Golborne...

I would have thought that approach control to the "mickey mouse" signal over the A573 would be the method on the Down line would be the solution for anything going into Wallgate? A brief few seconds stop whilst mode was changed over, then away.

I did also think about this, but wouldn't top and tailing increase (double?) the carbon footprint of the service, which goes against the initial principle of the whole concept?

I'm still curious as to how the return journey will be made? As there is no longer a loop at Burscough Bridge, then is it a trip all the way to Southport to run around?

Wouldn't a simple loop be more efficient than a siding, and take up minimal space, with a load / unload facility adjacent? So a 50% width increase on the permanent way for a few hundred metres, and the loading facility on Heinz land? That would also provide a run-round option for eastbound exit...

Although I was only a young lad at the time, I too don't recall an original service to Manchester, but the services to the south IIRC went via Newton le Willows and Earlestown junctions / stations

Would make sense to site it in the same, or very close area as plenty of land where the old coal sidings were, and is adjacent to a current car park which does have scope for enlargement onto the afore mentioned NR land

The Golborne station reopening was always going to be close to the top of Andy Burnham's agenda, seeing that he lives in the town :smile: , and is much more likely to go ahead than the proposed parkway station at Kenyon, as that would need cooperation from Warrington Cheshire, which is situated...

There's a triangle at Chester, and steam charters to Holyhead turn the loco at the triangle at Valley. There's also a triangle at Wavertree, Liverpool using the olive mount chord, but I'm unsure if that's ever been used for turning a loco

I've a set of quail maps from 1990, and they're shown as active as "Wigan Ince Moss Tip", so they were in use then.

Was there an opportunity missed when Newton-le-Willows station was upgraded last year that the platforms weren't lengthened whilst engineers / plant were already on site? There appears to be plenty of room to the east for around 100m more platform before the curve kicks in. The new Nova 1's now...
