From what I've read battery trains are good for about 30 miles between recharging. High charge short overhead rails in certain stations en-route might work.
No problem. Thought others might be interested in it. So sad that it didn't even get off the ground as a project before being grounded. Hopefully it'll get resurrected sometime, here's hoping
BTW I've added a link to the full PowerPoint presentation used in the video in my thread starter
Interesting PWI presentation on the CLC Line of Route Upgrade (posted on You Tube on 28 November 2025 on the Permanent Way Institute (PWI) channel), which was recently concluded by a joint group involving Matt McDonald and WSP, which looked at all the options for upgrading the route between...
Out of curiosity, does anyone know whether any consideration was given to adding 3rd rail capability at any time, or would the system be unlikely to cope with the additional energy requirements?
The Class 93 are essentially a derivative of the Class 88 but with a larger diesel engine and some batteries. This format allows them to be used in a very similar fashion to the 88s, allowing them to shunt wagons or coaches into non-electrified sidings etc. which are just off the mainline or...
Shouldn't it be mandatory to contact the railway control centre before crossing with such a load. I can't understand why they wouldn't have done so otherwise anyway! Absolutely unbelievable attitude.
I'm sorry if this has been discussed previously, but, of course, when you try and search using the title you get hundreds of possible threads, none of which seem to fit the bill.
My question arises from a discussion I was having on a Facebook group, where it was asserted that a Eurostar e300...
Would have been better with a through station under New Street with 4 platforms. All trains could have gone through with trains heading north east from an underground junction north of New Street. Curzon Street wasn't the best idea.
But whether they live in Runcorn or Widnes, the Wirral or towards Chester, at least they don't have to travel to Warrington as I would strongly suspect they won't stop in Widnes. Warrington already gets a good service North and South
HS2 trains from Liverpool south running from Ditton Junction passed Fidler's Ferry through Warrington Bank Quay Low Level and on to the new HS2 line sounds, well, completely bonkers, just to serve Warrington. Can't see how it could possibly be quicker than going via Runcorn.
Not sure that will...
I guess the most odd thing for me is the complete lack of any thought of moving to ECTS in all this. Surely that would get rid of a lot of lineside signalling renewals in one big go. It's got to happen sooner or later. What is it with this country and moving ahead. If the Swiss can do it...
