No the guard was correct, it isn’t possible to add stops in, only take out. The stops are predefined based on the head code of the train.

Can you now collect online tickets from Northern ticket machines? Just been to book some tickets and the machine at Barnsley is now showing as an option for collection. Can anyone confirm this?

We may be able to buy them from post offices/newsagents (possibly through paypoint terminals?) and also online. Don't quote me on that but it is what they are considering.
