Great Central Railway News and Updates

There's a YouTube video showing numerous services during the Sunday and it looked very quiet on the plaforms and trains. Presumably it's a combination of the football on the Saturday night, heatwave across the weekend and the nearby Rempstone Steam Rally that hindered numbers. I also noticed...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

I've just seen this on the Great Central Railway's Facebook Page: I wasn't aware of the upcoming retirement of the set and so I started looking for further information. I then found this on the Diesel Railcar Day page: Is this a recent change of plan or has it long been on the cards?

    LNER Azuma Controlled Emission Toilets

Hopefully they've been designed in a way to reduce this after the issue with the Voyagers!

    LNER Azuma Controlled Emission Toilets

That makes sense. How long would a tank normally be venting for? It was still noticable when we got to Retford. On a related note, I noticed there was a set of green LED's and another set of amber LED's under train as I got got on, I believe where the CET tank is (I was looking as I wondered if...

    LNER Azuma Controlled Emission Toilets

When boarding an Azuma (800206) to travel from Doncaster to Retford after attending the event at Wabtec Doncaster on Saturday, the smell from the CET tanks was noticeable while standing on the platform at the toilet end of coach C. The smell was also present inside the carriage, not quite as...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

No the website doesn't show this on standard operating days sadly. There will be one steam loco used for the passenger services and the second loco will work the footplate experience or goods experience and then drop onto the 1pm first class dining service.

What is this on Tornado and Flying Scotsman?

Thanks all, I also posted my question on the GCR Facebook group and the general consensus is it's a Snifter Valve: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snifting_valve It seems many steam locos have them but on some locos they are located close to the cylinders. I'm surprised I've not spotted it...

What is this on Tornado and Flying Scotsman?

What is this venting steam just behind Flying Scotsman's chimney? I noticed the same thing on Tornado's boiler. The safety valve is at the cab end of the boiler, and it's not a whistle. Does anyone know what it is?

    Severn Valley Railway Operations Website

It's a shame they haven't chosen to keep publishing to the site for public information/interest. It used to be linked from the Locomotive Roster page, as be be seen using the Web Archive:

    Severn Valley Railway Operations Website

Have the Severn Valley Railway discontinued their Operations site? https://www.svrlive.com/operations It used to be updated weekly, giving traffic notices and working timetables for each day available as a PDF as well as displaying locomotive allocations. It hasn't been updated since the end of...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

I'm surprised to see that Ellis Tea Rooms at Rothley are being permanently closed next month. https://www.facebook.com/gcrofficial While I've only been in on a couple of occasions, it seemed to be a nice cafe and there are numerous benches outside that are normally filled with people watching...

At least this means that should a decision to bring back a trolley service is ever made it would be easy to do.

    Kitchen Equipment

Having been on the GCR on Saturday with their Griddle Car being in operation, what equipment do the Mark 1 RBR's have? I know they have propane as a fuel and I presume no electric appliances due to no ETS being available. How does refrigeration work on these coaches? Has anyone got a list of...

    December 2025 East Coast Timetable

I don't think anyone has mentioned it but looking at LNER's PDF timetable, the named trains have had their names removed. It is shocking that two towns in the same county are loosing almost all of their direct rail connections. I know there isn't a huge amount of traffic between the two but...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

It's the Autumn Diesel Gala this weekend. I see the timetable online hasn't been updated from what was uploaded in the middle of August. There's a bit of an inconsistency as the webpage about the gala says there are four sets in use (A, B, C and PCLS) and mentions a Class 101 DMU, yet the...

    LNER Onboard Staff

Presumably five car services don't offer LEAYS then if there's only one host in standard? The nine cars do seem to have fewer hosts than they used to, although this may have changed when the Azumas came in. This old handbook from East Coast days shows where staff should be positioned and it...
