If you had to replace everything operated by Northern except the electric units with a single type of DMU what would you use.?

The government seems to be talking of speeding up development of the Tyne and Wear Metro. Does the mean that the existing planned upgrades will just happen faster or is there the chance of new routes and trains? John

What do people think? From the point of view of evening out rail investment in country and spending where the recession is hitting hardest the idea seems to have some merit...

Just a thought but if we were to build a high speed line between Edinbrough and Newcastle this would be much cheaper than in the south but make a huge time saving between these two cities and more importantly between Scotland and London. Air travel between Edinbrough London would be much less...
