Updating this walk's web page after too long a gap. If you're in the area, it's a great walk, in an area of spectacular coastal walks..
In 2009, a London to Wool (between Southampton and Weymouth) day return was "~ £45...
Holland had a 49 euro monthly off peak pass during the summer. It's subscription style, but you can cancel. Peak is a couple of hours morning and evening on weekdays. Looks pretty good value.
If only we had something similar....
(Edited to change weekly to monthly)
Stowfield railway viaduct across the river Wye in the forest of dean, now a footpath, is to remain closed for now. Due to cost, options involve replacing with a modern bridge rather than repairing it.

A friend who rarely travels by train recently brought an off peak single (Saturday afternoon) from London Victoria to Hove (near Brighton), a 1 hour journey (~ 50 miles).
It cost £37.
They were stunned at the cost.
Until pricing is fixed, most people will make most of their journeys by car...
Wheatley Viaduct (Halifax), part of a closed line, has been repaired. It's not clear from the article if its reopened to pedestrian traffic
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crm2nee42plo ("A Victorian viaduct in Halifax has been restored in a £1.2m renovation scheme.")
Once upon a time, if a peak single was £10, a peak return would be £20, and an after 9:30 cheap day return £10.10
Now it seems (in the south east) that an off-peak return is only a little cheaper than a peak return in many cases.
Have off-peak day returns gone up by that much?
But contactless...
Was on the M1 a couple of times recently, for the first time in a while.
Lots of bad driving, people pulling in 5 feet from you at 70mph, best was lane 3 to hard shoulder to overtake then back again.
Passed a 2 car accident at 6am when the road was nearly empty.
Although its a bit nanny state...

I rather like historical railways posters. Does anyone know of free-to-use railway poster collections.
The Science Museum / National Railway museum has this : https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/search/categories/railway-posters,-notices-&-handbills?page[size]=100
A couple of their...

The "Web/CSS" colour codes are red ( #E60000 ) and white ( #FFF ). The shade of red has changed.

Rail Magazine has an article on last summer's German 9 euro per month flat fare public transport scheme.
- it was was very popular
- was expensive to subsidise (2.5 BN).
- people liked the flat fare nature of the scheme (I think German local and regional trains have separate tickets)
- it made...
Which long or high or interesting bridges/viaducts can you walk over?

Almondell Viaduct, West Lothian aka: Camps Viaduct
Alston Arches, Northumberland aka: Haltwhistle Viaduct

Instead of going on strike, and annoying passengers, offer to work for free on strike days IF the train companies agree that all train travel is free on that day as well.
The train companies would find that offer very hard to refuse.
The trains would be **packed**.
It could be a party with...
Why are there no trains from Charing Cross - London Bridge to Ebsfleet International to link up with HS1 trains to the Kent coast.
(There used to be trains from Ebsfleet via south London to Waterloo, so there is/was a route)
Conclusion:
The HS1 junction is on the Kent side of Ebsfleet...
Colorado Police perform a traffic stop, parking their police car on a level crossing, just behind the suspect's car.
Police arrest suspect, and place her in the police car, then go and search her vehicle for weapons.
A freight train comes, and hits the police car (containing the arrested...
Early Saturday evening.
A Southern train from the south coast to London Victoria. I'm about the only person in the last carriage of maybe 8.
A bunch of male youths enter the carriage, walk to the end, and sit in the first class area. They are mildly anti social (noisy, loud music, larking...

The article looks at the effect of Crossrail/Elizabeth Line on TFL's finances, and it is was a good value investment. It's author is an industry consultant.

Several of my friend who live in the south east have gotten very used to working from home.
The ones inside the M25 are open to the idea of returning to the office. The ones outside have gotten used to saving an hour (or 2) a day, each way, and £2K+ annual season tickets. There's **no** way...
