Are Westinghouse air brakes found in the UK? I’ve heard that most locomotives there use a vacuum system, but I thought that perhaps older models might still use ‘standard’ air brakes (26L, A7, etc).
How are driver infractions dealt with in the UK? Is there a disciplinary standard across the network, or does each operator have its own procedures? Do drivers accumulate points?
By ‘infractions’ I’m referring to on-track incidents such as SPADs, overspeeds, overshoots and so forth, as well as...
What sort of cycle do British vigilance control systems follow? Ours is dynamic, ranging between 30 and 60 seconds depending on speed. You have 10 seconds to press the button before the brakes lock on.
Is that standard in the UK, too?
Is there much variation in signalling systems throughout UK? Say a driver from Aberdeen transferred to Penzance. Would he need to learn an entirely novel system of signals and rules, as well as the lines and rolling stock?
How common is two-man operation in UK railways nowadays? Beginning in the 2000s, we switched to one-man operation (for a hefty pay rise) but I do wonder about other countries. Do some UK locos still require two drivers for signal sighting?
Are pilots (small shunting locomotives) still used in the UK to move passenger cars around stabling yards? Or are passenger trains generally kept in uniform, unbroken consists?
Hi everyone. How much route knowledge is expected of drivers where you are?
In my case, I have the option of two passenger train rosters. The first involves mastering five intercity lines (double-track, fast, high signal density, many junctions) with a total of around 350 miles. You’re home...
How are fatalities dealt with in your company? Our standard is a trauma payment (roughly £3000) and as much paid leave as required - usually two or three months.
Does this sound pretty standard where you are?

Forgive the newbie question, but how is it possible to 'lock-up' (ie overcharge) carriage air brakes? I've heard stories of exasperated freight drivers having to walk the entire length of their train to release air from the brake cylinders of every carriage.
From what I understand of air brakes...
Hello everybody
I've just started training as a driver here in Adelaide and I'm trying to improve my understanding of signalling. The South Australian system is broadly similar to the British one, from what I understand.
Can anyone recommend a particular programme or app? I'm especially...
