Extremely loud train noise at St Pancras Thameslink

Have just made my first visit to the TL platforms at St Pancras in many years. Had to wait a while for my train and noticed the incredibly loud screeching noise trains in both directions were making, to the point my ears were ringing after each train left. I used to commute to STP regularly...

Historic number of passenger trains in the timetable

These days on a typical weekday there are about 22,000 passenger trains in the timetable (24,000 odd pre-Covid). Does anyone know roughly what the equivalent figure would have been at the pre-Breching peak?

Trivia: Non-consecutive stations on the same line named after the same place

Llandudno and Llandudno Junction lie on the same line but are separated by an intermediate station for a different place (Deganwy). What other examples of this are there on the network? Any journey requiring changes/connections does not count

Trivia: Stations with platforms that have never been used

The up platform at Chessington South has never been used, due to the extension of the line being cancelled after WW2. What other examples are there on the network?

Trivia: Trains that pass through two common stations with different intermediate calling points

From Epsom I can take either an SWR or Southern to Clapham Junction. Between Epsom and Clapham the trains do not pass through any locations in common. How many other examples of this where trains start at a common location, take different routes and then pass through a common location again...

Trivia: trains scheduled to call at the same station consecutively

Today, SWR was running trains from Waterloo to Reading via Wimbledon, reversing at Virginia Water. The PSA actually announced two consecutive stops at Virginia Water (at different platforms), as reflected by the timetable: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W91570/2019/04/07 Just...

With all the issues that the the class 345 and 710s have experienced, how likely are the new Class 701 trains (which are pretty much a clone of the above) to be delivered from Summer 2019 as planned?

Trivia: Rail journeys that used to be much quicker

Some journeys between stations on the current NR network used to be much quicker due to now-closed lines. Which journey has been slowed down the most? A few possibilities: Waterloo to Waterloo East Alton to Winchester Hertford East to Hertford North Blackpool North to Preston Uckfield to Lewes

TRIVIA: Hardest Rail lines to reinstate

Which lines would be so hard to reinstate (from an engineering/construction point of view) that even the most ardent of crayonistas wouldn’t claim it was possible? Some suggestions - Westerham branch - now part of the M25! - Bedford-Cambridge (original alignment), now has housing, a cycle path...

SWR Refusing to Pay Passenger Charter compensation on Oyster Annual Travelcard

I’ve just renewed my Z1-6 Annual to Travelcard, which I use to travel to work in Central London via the Chessington branch. It was bought before the SWR franchise change so the old Passenger’s Charter/ Void days regime applies. For the first (and last given Delay Repay now applies) time ever...

Use of 7xx and 8xx numbers

Why have Class 7xx and 8xx numbers been used for new units in recent years when there are plenty of unused numbers in the 3xx and 4xx ranges? Will there ever be any more new units numbered in these ranges? Is there supposed to be any differentiation between an 8xx and a 7xx?
