Is the only permitted route between these two stations via Blackburn?
I get the train from Bolton to Preston everyday as part of my commute and there's a guy who everytime he buys a ticket on board gets a Darwen to Preston return yet does the same Bolton-Preston fTPE train as I in both...
Like many in the area, I have applied for "the weekender" unlimited rail travel on Northern's network on selected weekend dates.
The other half and I have never been to Chester and just fancied it a week on Saturday. However, I note Bolton to Chester using Northern Rail only is not all that...
I have a standard class monthly rail season ticket between bromley Cross and Preston valid via Bolton on fTPE.
When I last checked some months ago, TPE offered monthly or longer ST holders a complimentary first class service at weekends between your two stations.
If that remains valid...
I've got a friend who wants to travel today around 3pm from her home in Lancaster ultimately ending at Atherton. But she wants to go via Manchester Oxford Road and stop off for a short break to meet a friend before then going on to Atherton.
So her journey will be Lancaster (dep 3pm) -> Man...
EDITED:
For years I have been buying monthly ST between Bolton and Preston. However, recently I was advised to renew between Bromley Cross and Preston as this would be cheaper but still valid on the Bolton to Preston line served by fTPE.
END OF EDIT:
My query is whether any other permitted...
My other half and I (no railcards) are hoping to visit some friends who live fairly close to Ipswich/Colchester and have said either station is fine.
We're going down on 14 January returning 16 January. Times are flexible. We could take either a full or half day off work on the Friday. Coming...
I was travelling on the Pacer in question. I caught it at Bolton. The delayed 7:35 to Blackpool North.
Just south of Ribble bridge on approach to Preston we came
to a sharp halt. Guard told us we'd hit
somone and driver badly shaken.
Around 70 mins after coming to rest we rolled into Preston.
I fully appreciate I'm being pedantic here and there's far more important issues currently but it seems within the GMPTE area, the station referred to in timetables as "Lostock" and signage at the station itself agrees with this, GMPTE calling displays always refer to it as "Lostock Parkway". In...
My Mother, a Senior Railcard holder, is planning on visiting some family and friends on her way down to the ferry terminal
at Portsmouth Harbour.
She's planning on leaving Preston on Wednesday 9 June and staying the night in Walsall. The next day she's wanting to travel to Carterton (Oxford...
Any advice gratefully received.
2 adults travelling from Bolton to Durham departing mid-morning to lunch on Easter Sunday (4 April) and departing Durham mid-afternoon on Easter Tuesday (6 April).
£75 all in seems the best "normal" way of booking via Trainline etc via FTPE.

Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere.
As iPhone/iPod Touch users will know, National Rail's own idevice app costs a staggering five of your whole British pounds and whilst in my opinion very user friendly, easy to use and offering good functionality, the thought of paying a fiver...
Yesterday I reached platform 5 at Preston station around 5:05pm. A fTPE 185 bound for Windermere was stationery at platform 4, its position compatible with that of a 2 x 185 unit which had decoupled and the most northerly unit having now departed. I know from experience the front portion departs...
Hope this has been posted in the correct sub-forum.
Last week I booked a journey from Bolton to Lancaster on fTPE and opted for first class. I chose not to reserve seats as I did not perceive there to be an issue as my daily commute sees the 185 first class section largely empty at peak...
Am I right in thinking 180, 185, 220/1/2 are all fitted with the same Cummins QSK19 diesel engines which power the generators which produce the electrical energy which power the axles?
In which case, why is it they all sound quite different whether idling, revving up or in use...
At the time of posting I am over 9 hours and 6 trains into a marathon travel session which started out at 7 this morning at Bolton station and will hopefully conclude there in 25 minutes time.
I've used Northern to Wigan North Western, Virgin to Wolverhampton, CrossCountry to Winchester...
I've just alighted from this service at Wigan but prior to arrival checked with NRE's iPhone app for live running info.
This train reportedly left Lichfield Trent Valley two minutes early.
Not sure I've ever seen green departure info before!
I very rarely make last minute rail excursions but it looks as though I am going to have to travel to Winchester (to arrive by 12:45pm) one weekday next week, returning probably around 4:30-5:30pm.
I did this once before earlier in the year taking a local service from Bolton to Manchester...
Waiting for my normal commute at Bolton this morning, the 07:59 fTPE to Edinburgh arrived at platform 4 FROM the Preston end. Driver got out of his cab and proceeded to walk back down to other end of the train.
Those on the platform, myself included, were somewhat bemused by all this as the...
Boarding the 1747 fTPE to Manchester Airport at Preston station tonight, who should be stood in the small standard class section between first class and the driving cab (as this was the rear 185 of a 2 x 185 service) but Vernon Barker, Managing Director of First TransPennine Express.
Never...
Yesterday late afternon I arrived at Preston station aiming to catch the 1647 (I think it is) fTPE to Manchester Airport. This service normally comprises 2 x 3 car 185s which combine at Preston with the first 3 coaches coming from the Lakes and the latter 3 from Scotland. Although the Lakes...
