Buying A Ticket Before You Travel?

I've noticed lots of rail operators now use IRCAS/ITAL to catch people without tickets/out of date tickets etc. Genuine question: what wrong are you actually doing by getting on a train without a ticket? I can almost hear most of you say "it's part of the terms and conditions you must buy...
