    Double-Deck trains in UK

I’ve attached a pdf copy of the DfT Double Decker Report. There‘s a section 8.3 starting in page 40 that explains how they looked at infrastructure costs in a broad way. I reckon there have been references to this report in threads dating back to 2009, and I also believe anyone reading the...

    Double-Deck trains in UK

I think the DfT double-decker trains report of 2007 included an attempt to cost the infrastructure changes needed on a few routes around London, eg the Brighton Line. It quickly concluded they were off the scale. They also did a comparison with other options and decided that in the areas of the...

What prevents a better and more frequent service running between Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds?

Yes what I meant I suppose was the suggestion that nobody would be running them. Clearly if terminating at New St, (if that work), they could be operated by the future replacements for either GWR or SWR, but I think they’re still part of the debate.

Nine HS2 bridges with welding defects

Away from HS2 the new A1 road bridge over the ECML, (near the Team Valley in Gateshead), is being assessed for the same firm’s weld issues. All they’ve done so far is ban abnormal loads, but normal traffic is running. It might eventually need repairs over the live railway I suppose. No doubt...

What prevents a better and more frequent service running between Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds?

As is usual, most suggestions seem to ignore intermediate journeys between Bournemouth and New Street, such as to from Oxford, Banbury or Leamington. They won’t easily transfer to HS2. I‘m not convinced south coast to Birmingham via a change at Old Oak Common will be much better than the...

    Class 455/7

It’s a fairly normal move, I think there’s still permanent Q paths daily each way, (and they‘re in the next working timetable until May 2025), and they do get used a couple of times each month. There’s also daily Salisbury depot to Bournemouth depot Q paths via Southampton for maintenance...

Elizabeth Line - total loss of signalling 26/11

Yes. NR publicity refers to it as being ‘at Hitchin’ for some reason, perhaps that’s where the test control centre is.

    Tram signalling

I would recommend taking the TW Metro completely out of any discussion about trams anyway. It has almost no similarities with tram systems, it has a completely segregated route way, and is regulated as a light rail metro system, not a tramway.

    New station in Killingworth

I suspect there are more suitable metro stations than considering Cramlington or Northumberland Park National rail. The closed station at Killingworth, (or is it Forest Hall?), can’t be a significant distance from Benton, they're both on the same “station road”. I’m sure this aspect has been...

Avanti Class 221s to Cross Country

There’s another significant long running thread and current under the heading “XC Voyager refurbishment”, that effectively includes everything that’s known. The plans were always to take on only 3 former WC units to allow the first 3 XC units to go for refurb on completion of the summer...

    New station in Killingworth

It’s been operated at up to 20 tph in one or two peak hours if you go back far enough. The new fleet was supposed to bring back 6 tph on both lines, so 12 tph in the core.

    Crossrail...3?

I think you‘re attempting to reverse engineer a logo that had nothing to do with theoretical extra Crossrail routes.

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

12 units, (individual unit numbers not stated), have been announced as definitely going to XC, but there are other threads covering it.

    Northumberland place names and pronunciations

Edlingham is definitely another ‘jum’, not that sure about Ellingham though. But if anyone’s into phonetics, I have a list of Northumberland and Durham place names and taking Edlingham as the example it shows: “edlindžəm”. as the pronunciation. Maybe that means something to an expert…

Why SWR`s the worst of all?

That was in 2012 under the passenger’s charter compensation system, it was pretty normal practice back then, AFAIK it’s not at all relevant to today.

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

If they follow up from Alstom’s announcements back in the summer, (as posted in this thread at the time), nothing will start until Jan 2025. It’ll probably be later, on usual industry form.

Southampton - london Waterloo, monthly travelcard with london underground zones 1-6

As far as I know they never have been a fixed multiple. For many years in the southeast weekly and other seasons were regulated fares, but what became anytimes were not. it’s the anytime and Offpeak fares around here that need to reduce, but I doubt that will ever happen.

That never guarantees the barriers will allow the break though, as I’m sure you’ll already know..
