What will happen to Northern, ATW & GWR if the Class 769 "FLEX" fails?

Could the "not for London" aspect play a role here?

What will happen to Northern, ATW & GWR if the Class 769 "FLEX" fails?

Wouldn't that have knock-on effects for the displacement of Turbo's to Bristol, and using Electrostars for HEx? If no 387's can be released from GWR services for use on HEx, I can see DfT/HS2 getting pretty upset.

TGV duplex, would it fit through the channel tunnel?

Maybe some vague sketches or rough designs linger around in the Alstom offices, but they for sure have never built one. The AGV has been a project years in the making (it was first mentioned in 1998!) which Alstom paid for out of their own pocket. There were no customers who were looking for an...

    Amsterdam in 24 hours

Yes, but then it's at the beginning of your journey and not halfway through. It's also a mindset thing of course. I think it's good that Eurostar now operate direct services, as this gives them the freedom to set their own prices. You can get London to Amsterdam for as little as EUR 40 on...

    Amsterdam in 24 hours

But it is still a break of journey, and now you're getting the security hassle halfway through the journey. This costs time and is a disruption of the journey experience itself. If you're going to have to deal with that security hassle anyway, you might as well take the plane.

    Eurotunnel problems 27 July

If I understand it correctly, the problem is with the air conditioning on board the Eurotunnel trains. The Le Shuttle trains are 775 metre long stainless steel tubes - they will absorb a lot of the sun's energy and will heat up quickly. For the past couple of days the sun has been shining pretty...

TGV duplex, would it fit through the channel tunnel?

My guess: it maximised interior space available to passengers, providers a more quiet ambiance due to no traction equipment being under the coaches, and it makes maintenance easier as power cars can be swapped around without having to take the entire set out of service. Pretty much what people...

TGV duplex, would it fit through the channel tunnel?

As far as my understanding of TVM goes, the difference is related to system configuration. When entering a TVM-430 section the train receives information about which route it is on (the "code de réseau"), which is then used to look up parameters relating to the specific route. If the train does...

TGV duplex, would it fit through the channel tunnel?

From a technical point of view, the TGV Duplex sets should fit in the Channel Tunnel. I think that the 3rd generation, the Euroduplex, would meet channel tunnel fire safety regulations. There are strict fire regulations for the Le Perthus tunnel between France and Spain, which these trains meet...

    Germany Railcard

However, it might be more cost effective to just buy a couple of Sparpreis tickets (Advance tickets) or use Ländertickets. You're only there for a few days, you won't be using the BahnCard after that. Sparpreis tickets might not yet be available for December, so you won't see those prices when...

    Amsterdam in 24 hours

There are plenty of Amsterdammers who complain about the loss of "their" direct tram or direct bus route to the city centre. Give it some time, they'll have to embrace the metro.

Class 444 control issues on New version of Portsmouth Direct line

From what I've read in the manual, the DSD is now on the "E" key.

    Amsterdam Eurostar

The Swiss and Italian railways have trains which tilt: the Pendolino (ETR.460) and New Pendolino (ETR 600 / 610, RABe 503) series, but those aren't used for Railjet services. Trivia: the longest route served by a Pendolino is probably the Frankfurt - Milan ECE. It leaves Milan and 11:23 in the...

Those are most likely to stabilise everything to ensure a smooth journey at 230 km/h.

Railjets do not tilt. Sweden and Denmark also have higher speed running (DK 180 km/h, SE 200 km/h) with in-cab signalling (DK: ZUB 123, SE: ATC/EBICAB).

    Amsterdam Eurostar

Here you go, thanks to Google Maps: The route is as follows (indicates speeds are the maximum permitted on the infrastructure): - Brussels - Mechelen: line 25N (160 km/h) - Mechelen - Antwerp-Centraal: line 25 (160 km/h) - Antwerp - Barendrecht: HSL4/HSL-Zuid (300 km/h) - Barendrecht -...

    Right- versus left-hand running

Dagen H did lead to the demise of many tram systems, as it was too expensive to replace the existing vehicles which had their doors on the left hand side.

    Right- versus left-hand running

In Sweden cars originally ran on the left side of the road. In the 60's the Swedes realised that it became increasingly difficult to change that, it was a "now or never" moment for them. So they passed the necessary legislation and on the 3rd of September 1967 everyone switched over to right...

    Right- versus left-hand running

The Netherlands also have a sign to indicate to which track a signal applies, it's a black sign with a white arrow on it. The reason for using a Belgian sign on Dutch soil is probably to reduce confusion. Typically the train will be driven by a Belgian driver, who is not used to the Dutch look.

    Automated systems?

In a few years time, the Hamburg S-Bahn can be added to the list, as an agreement has been signed to roll out ATO over ETCS. Initially on a trial basis, if this turns out to be a success the entire network will be converted to ATO running. Drivers will remain on the trains, but will only be...
