Train drivers favorite and least favorite routes to drive?

surely some places are a bit rough to drive. Always the risk of vandalism, obstructions places on the track or kids chucking stuff at trains. That must be wearing.

Routes/Services you think should be transferred to a different TOC

Birmingham - Manchester to west coast franchise. Run electric trains on it. 5 car IEP's. Maybe its just me, but I would prefer 350's to Voyagers.

Solving level crossing problems in built up areas through wider urban redevelopment

why not bite on the bullet and build a tunnel to replace the railway. nice linear urban park on the top. cost a few £££ but the benefits would be quite large.

Noisiest locos, DMU, EMU past and present

I got an unsilenced 37 + 4 on a cardiff - manchester from Crewe when the 155's had door issues. It was a little late and the driver had a grudge. I was in the coach right behind the loco. That was loud!

Question for signallers re: controlled crossings

what happens if a blue light vehicle approaches a crossing? Will the signaler abort the crossing sequence to allow it past? I am especially thinking of Kildwick. its on the ambulance route to Airedale from the north west (Skipton and beyond). It stays down for ages sometimes. I was in an...

    Manchester Victoria or Manchester Piccadilly

Yes the bit of Vic under the Arena is horrid. But the concourse by the tramstop is quite nice. Lovely overall roof. I sat for 45 minutes at a table by the glass screens by the tram track drinking a costa coffee before Covid. :) But I bet its a draughty place to sit in winter....

    Time to electrify... the motorways?

So assuming we go for low voltage DC, say 750v. How many lorries will be in a section and what power will they draw? This matters because you have to set the circuit breakers at an ampage so they dont keep tripping. But the higher the ampage, the bigger the risk if there is a shorting...

    Time to electrify... the motorways?

Where will you set the contact wire height. The clearance between a HGV and a motorway bridge soffit is very tight. How will HGV's overtake each other? An empty HGV will want to overtake a full one on a hill. How much more will an empty bi-mode HGV weigh? Thats payload gone.

Rail decarbonisation: What are the solutions?

Well electrification assumes the electric is 100 carbon free I am not really happy about too much nuclear either. OK, no carbon but what about the waste, and what about accidents like Cherobyl? But the real way to cut carbon is to get people out of cars. Thats where the real carbon reductions are.

    Transdev Blazefield

The York and County, and the Flyer one takes you to the same timetable list. No mention in the coloured boxes of the Otley - Ilkley - Skipton service. But t least York and County gets its own box now.

How long is too long for an absolute block section and where is the longest?

Thats a business decision, surely. A massive delay because of a long section means the railway suffers reputational loss. How you calculate the value of that I dont know. On another thread we see a discussion about Northerns TVM's. There is speculation about whether cost cutting had made the...
