Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

There used to be a column called Daedalus in the journal Nature by David Jones. When GM crops first hit the news, he suggested engineering brown rice so you would get a low dose of nicotine, and be addicted to a high fibre diet.

First Train from Ely to Cambridge on a Sunday

Thats a shame. I might use that with an Anglia Day Ranger, to walk from Berney Arms. The 7:57 means Ely-Cambridge-Ipswich-Norwich connects with the same train to Berney Arms that you get with the first direct Ely-Norwich train.

First Train from Ely to Cambridge on a Sunday

In recent years, the first train on a Sunday morning from Ely to Cambridge has been about 9am, which gets to Kings Cross after 10am, Stansted at 11 and after 12 for Heathrow and Gatwick. I just checked on RealTimeTrains which has times for last weekend and through to October. These are the...

Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

For the Ely Southern Bypass, they initially planned on 30m deep piles. They ended up with piles which were over 42m deep and 1200mm diameter. In the second document, I like the comment: In a previous discussion, @Bald Rick commented:

Premium car features you would pay extra NOT to have

Manual handbrakes were easy and simple for cars with rear drum brakes, with the cable pulling the same brake shoes as would be used for the hydraulic foot brake. I think the issue is that if you brake hard and then park the car, the brake pad for disc brakes will be hot and could then distort...

    London to Calais?

I've used https://www.goopti.com/en/ for a trip from Trieste to Ljubljana. They use 8 seater minibuses where you can book a seat. You get door to door service, within the areas that they cover. The prices vary depending on how flexible you are with the departure time. I think it would be a good...

Premium car features you would pay extra NOT to have

My 2012 Mondeo does it too. It was fine. Then the key fob started to get stuck with the key folded in. I got a replacement for the blank key on eBay, got the key cut and swapped over the electronics for the immobiliser, for a fraction of the cost of a replacement key from Ford. The problem was...

Premium car features you would pay extra NOT to have

The first car I drove with an automatic hand brake like this was a hire car. I parked it in an underground car park at a hotel. To get out, there was a steep ramp on a corner. There were two boxes near the barrier for the parking card. I drove up to the one closest to the barrier and found out...

Sony - The Worst Earphones Ever Manufactured ?

My daughter has some Sony XM3s from a couple of years ago. The noise cancellation is really impressive. The What HiFi comparison of the Sony WH-1000XM5 and Bose 700 headphones says 1681259026 Personally, I like Soundmagic E10 ear buds which are ~ £32 or so. I use them for podcasts. They are...

Travel to Hamburg around 15 July. Looking for cheap travel advice.

Could you go to the gig first and then visit Hamburg? If you visit Hamburg first and get delayed, then if you are late, you will miss the gig. Meeting your friends is probably more flexible. Seat61.com says On the day sailing, if you don't have a cabin (your luggage) can be left in a luggage...

East Lancs Railway protects reputation by sacking leading woman in a male dominated sector?

There are tools like https://dmstern.github.io/likers-blocker/ which will block twitter users who have liked posts. Its possible that you could install something like this and forget about it. Once it has been raised as an issue, you should be able to turn it off.

    Robert Humm books

I am completely confident that he will be honest. Its always possible that he could get ill. I visited the shop about a year ago, and it was tidy and well organised. The shop has limited opening hours so you should check, and possibly book an appointment if you plan to visit.

    Robert Humm books

He has a good reputation. I've visited his shop and followed him on Twitter for a while, and he seems like a really nice guy. He sent out a catalogue a few weeks ago and wrote that he was thinking of retiring soon, as he is in his 70s and that he might publish one more catalogue.

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

In the last 10 years, new and used car prices have gone up by inflation, and a bit more. In more detail ... I bought a 2012 Mondeo Zetec 2.0 diesel from a Ford dealer when it was just under 3 years old with 56k miles for £8,500. The list price had been £20,895, so it had depreciated to 41%...
