Day trips possible by bus from Reading

Been meaning to reply to this one for a while. It does of course depend on what you like. Interesting and attractive locations within range would include Oxford and Windsor, as mentioned, also smaller towns such as Henley, Marlow and Abingdon - these all have areas where you can walk by the...

    Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Bus News

I see Hulleys have posted that they are going ahead with the Snake even though Greater Manchester has been put into tier 3 restrictions. Now South Yorkshire is going to be as well it must be very hard, I really wish them well and hope they continue even if custom is discouraging to start with...

    Staffordshire Bus News

I agree. This year has been very sparse. Just five trips since lockdown, June - a short day round Bedfordshire, July - two days in Cornwall, August - a great day covering Hull, York and Leeds and many places in between, September - Staffordshire to Buxton. Plenty planned, just need better...

    Staffordshire Bus News

No the Knot does not go across the county line out of Staffordshire. I bought a "Peak Plus" ticket which covered the 16 from Cheddleton and all High Peak routes, but I had to buy singles on the 130 and on the 85 from Crewe as far as the county boundary.

    Staffordshire Bus News

Thank you Grand Wazoo for your report on your trip to Staffordshire. It has reminded me that I should write about my trip there a few weeks ago. It was in better weather at the end of our mid-September warm spell, although misty in the early morning. Arriving around 7.15 (alarm at 4am!) I...

Websites and apps that have a bus tracker that shows the reg number or fleet number of the vehicles.

It's brilliant how its developing. All First Yorkshire did go offline early evening yesterday but its back again today. Taunton and Yeovil seem very light on data although some buses are tracking. No sign of Oldham, Scotland or South Wales and Slough seems flaky but all improvements are great...

Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield, plus Sheffield and Doncaster all seem to be tracking at the moment. Long may it continue!

Websites and apps that have a bus tracker that shows the reg number or fleet number of the vehicles.

Leeds and York are on at the moment as well. But not other parts of West Yorkshire. All of First South Yorkshire appears to be live. Brilliant!

    Hulley's of Baslow (Defunct)

Agreed and it also runs on non schooldays, but it’s not unusual to run a bus between school runs on school days but also run the same service on other days given that the vehicles and drivers are available- including many market day services

    Hulley's of Baslow (Defunct)

I think Sir Humphrey would describe this route as “courageous”. The running time in Manchester looks optimistic at least in ‘normal’ times and I wonder how often the Snake Pass is closed in a ‘normal’ winter. But it’s very well put together, with two vehicles on the X57 plus one on the X56...

    Arriva's revamped website

There is certainly strong evidence that Arriva don't care about Wales. It is very difficult to work out what is going on there and what is happening is not all designed to please the passenger! I have looked at various sources to try and piece things together. Both Gwynedd and Denbighshire...

    Most Scenic Bus Route

The link I have found is http://www.tlctravelltd.co.uk/bus-times-routes/ Then click on Huddersfield and choose 900/901/902 from 30 August. This brings up the 2019 timetable, implying that this is what is running from now. Clicking on Hebden Bridge brings up just the local journeys. Some third...

    Bus with Shortest working lives

So how come virtually every American bus and coach since time began has had a V8 engine?

    Most Scenic Bus Route

According to TLC Travel's own website (I didn't know they had one!) the service reverts to the pre-covid timetable from Tuesday. Nothing to this effect on Metro's website yet so I hope it is true. Also if you want to know what timetables South Pennine Community Transport are running from...

    Arriva's revamped website

Frankly it defies belief it's so bad, you would think someone is going to appear and say "April fool". Just look at the X18 (Newcastle to Berwick via the coast). The timetable is 25 pages. There is a section on pages 16-18 described as Newcastle to Alnwick. But on this we have the order of the...

    Bus with Shortest working lives

I stand corrected on DM952, I must have been dreaming it! DM931 was perhaps the one I was thinking of, this lasted 8 months in service on the 16 at Cricklewood. I liked the Seddon RUs but I understand they had a design fault in the driveline which made them prone to breaking in a way that...

    Arriva's revamped website

Thew new website is indescribably bad. I don't really know where to start. Select any region and service updates - it says there aren't any. But in Yorkshire there are several, accessible on this website but not through service updates. And the timetables, they are just dreadful. They have so...

First West of England (Bristol, Bath & The West)

Obviously I cannot accept any word spoken against Leyland engined REs! They were more powerful than the Gardner engines and Bristol must have considered them better suited to routes like the 376. But weren't Leyland outright world champions at strikes in the 1970s! Also the 3 day week and...

    Bus with Shortest working lives

As a class of vehicles the shortest working lives must surely be the Guy Wulfrunian, the Foden-NC decker, the Seddon Pennine RU and probably the Daimler Roadliner. As sub-classes perhaps also Daimler Fleetline single deckers due to structural issues. As regards a specific bus, ignoring mishaps...

    Most Scenic Bus Route

Agree with lots of these. I have done the 900 from Huddersfield to Hebden Bridge, this goes a slightly longer way round, and it is fabulous. But try the 508 from Windermere to Penrith via the Kirkstone Pass. Outstanding!
