Most interesting, mismatched, disjointed hotchpotch of a station on the network?

Well said! Perhaps not ‘boring’ though? Good diverse mix of traction.

Storm Amy Travel Disruption (03/10 onwards)

If I understand ScotRail correctly, the Highland main line Inverness - Perth will be closed all day today (Sat). The Royal Scotsman came in to Boat of Garten about 6.30 yesterday for what may have been an unintended visit (it has been in as recently as Wed night/ Thurs am).

Bleakest end of line station in National Rail UK in current use (Trivia)

Hate to say it but the old home town (Swansea) doesn't show itself at its best if you arrive in High Street late and aren’t sure where you are going.

    Caledonian Sleeper

Yes, but good luck getting to sleep before then. Even with beers. Showers: as someone else asked - if you’re in the seats, you’re searching for a shower elsewhere other than on the train - ironic, really.

    Caledonian Sleeper

The big negative about the Edinburgh/ Glasgow sleepers is that the train doesn’t depart till nearly midnight. Not many people will get a decent sleep between then and all the morning activity on the train (the split at Carstairs, for example). Plus, in the seats, no shower in the morning (though...

    Station pubs (part two?)

Further to exchanges above - Big shout out to the Bird in Hand (Stafford). £4.20 for a delicious pint of Bradley’s Finest Golden. Easy to find/ reach from the station too, and genuinely no more than 5 mins walk. Could become part of my regular north/ south journeys.

Stations not known by their "official" names?

I can’t believe I’m the only person from Swansea who still asks for High Street station (it never raises an eyebrow), even though all trace of that name seems to have gone, as indeed have Swansea’s other named stations.

    Station pubs (part two?)

Thanks all. So we have: - The Bird in Hand across the park - the Spoons (The Picture House), kind of right across the park, and follow the river - the Sun, also a bit further beyond Spoons - The Railway, turn left out of the station I have about 90 mins at Stafford and will want to swing by a...

    Station pubs (part two?)

Mind if I bring this thread backup? I’ve got a longish wait at Stafford in a week or two’s time. I believe there’s nothing beyond coffee, etc, on the station, which is a shame, but does anyone know a decent pub/ wine bar nearby? Or am I mistaken and does the catering include some form of bar. I...

Scenic places to stay in Scotland near a railway station.

Pitlochry and Highland Perthshire generally may be worth a look. Perhaps a bit far from the central belt cities for you.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

Quite. That ‘Blended Malt Scotch Whisky’ is an obscenity; the Scotch equivalent of turkey twizzlers.

[trivia] Stations named after a private organisation

May I propose Port Talbot (now PT Parkway)? I suggest this as I believe the docks (Port Talbot) came first, at a time when there was no local settlement called PT (arguably, still isn’t, though the name is used for the local authority). Having been brought up in South Wales, I have always known...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Am I right that the set ran to Edinburgh anyway (RTT seems to show this) and presumably on to London? I’m asking mainly because I will be on a sleeper on Sunday evening (northbound) and am/ was concerned there might not be stock in place. I’m sure there must be a good reason why some of the...

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

I think it’s always been a limited offering at the weekend

Altnabreac station and the various legal disputes around it

When I had some dealings around land registration in Scotland a few years ago, I learned two things: (a) that the registers of Scotland are incomplete (only about 70% of the land is registered) and (b) that the registrations made can be inaccurate: even recent ones like new housing. Marginally...

    Caledonian Sleeper

There is an anomaly in that users (me) like it, it is busy/ popular (I couldn’t book the trips I wanted in either Dec or early Feb), and yet vulnerable. When it goes wrong, it goes catastrophically wrong; either total canx or mammoth delays (or, more recently, your room has no shower …). When...

Has the Burger King at York shut?

Definitely. Haddock chips and beans and a mug of tea.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

The scenery may be in a cloud, to be fair. I like the LNER FC offering and agree it’s good value north of the border, but think there may be two reasons why the LNER fares are cheaper (and put them out there to encourage someone who knows more to explain …): - marginal revenue at zero marginal...

    Anyone live beside the railway.

Bit off piste for this thread but two of us used to kip out in a maintenance hut west of Cockett station as an adventure. Sleeping bags, camping stove and some grub. Enough timetabled action in the evening, of which the highlight was the Fishguard to London express, usually a 47 which would come...

Powderhall Branch Junction, Edinburgh - future use?

I’m in Edinburgh too, and walk close to there often, but what is more relevant is that someone much wiser than me once said, on this forum, that ‘the railway works from the railway’ and maybe they want to be able to send a train down there which will remove track, ballast, other valuable kit, etc?
