Coaching numbering on long distance Deutsche Bahn services

Thalys use the same numbering scheme on their services, as do many other operators. The weirdest I've encountered so far is the DSB/DB EuroCity between Copenhagen and Hamburg. These services are operated using six coach trains, consisting of 2× DSB IC3 DMUs. The coaches are numbered 71-72 and...

A special train from Amsterdam to Berlin on September 17, 2018

Venlo yard seems to have a set-up which matches your description. Detailed track layout diagrams are available for almost the entire Dutch network, and are updated quite frequently.

Thugs smash piano gifted to new Dundee station in memory of wife

Sadly, that is not true. The piano at Amsterdam Centraal has been smeared with poop, a piano at Nijmegen has been destroyed beyond repair by vandals, the piano at Delft had to be removed and the piano at Breda has been sent for repairs multiple times. It's a crazy world we live in.

A special train from Amsterdam to Berlin on September 17, 2018

At Venlo, the OHLE above tracks 1a, 2 and 3a can be switched between 1500 V DC and 15 kV AC. (Source: Sporenplan). Emmerich (D) also used to have switchable OHLE, but this is no longer in use after the big overhaul of 2016. Back then, the 25 kV AC of the Betuweroute freight line was extended...

A special train from Amsterdam to Berlin on September 17, 2018

Nearly all tracks in Bad Bentheim are switchable between 1500V DC and 15 kV AC, except for some headshunts. See this track diagram (scroll to the right).

Train Destination Boards. Keep or Get Rid?

As far as my understanding of the system goes, calling patterns are combined with the destination. The letter "O" means "Omnibus" or "all stations service"... so if PONG and ROMY go in the same direction and you need to get off at an intermediate station (before they branch off) you can take both.

Train Destination Boards. Keep or Get Rid?

In Paris, the RER uses a system called 'mission codes' to identify trains to the general public. These mission codes are displayed on trains, on information boards, and in the journey planner on SNCF.com. If you normally catch a "ROMY" train to get home but you're late, you can simply wait for...

    Berlin day ticket validation stamp

Readers? Surely you mean the Mk1 eyeball? :) Berlin (as many German cities) uses paper tickets on which a date gets stamped at the moment of validation. Tickets are valid from the moment of validation until the end of the indicated timeframe. You don't want to validate a single ticket multiple...

Amsterdam: complete outage of traffic control

What did not help was that ProRail originally announced the incident as having been resolved around 20:00. Between 18:45 en 20:00, NS and ProRail will most likely have been busy with guiding stranded trains to the next station so that passengers can disembark. After 20:00 the focus must've...

Amsterdam: complete outage of traffic control

The system has been running for 12 years and this hasn't happened before. While it is something that definitely should be fixed, I wouldn't call that unbelievably crappy software. Also, the safety critical system did exactly what it should do in case of unforseen circumstances: it stopped working.

Amsterdam: complete outage of traffic control

ProRail have explained what caused the issue: a software bug. At Schiphol Airport, platforms 1-2 and 5-6 are allocated dynamically on a first come first serve basis. There is a trigger point in the infrastructure which is activated when a train passes over it. Yesterday, when the shoplifter...

Amsterdam: complete outage of traffic control

At around 18:45 Dutch time, the Amsterdam signalling box went down. This brought train traffic on the Schiphol - Amsterdam - Weesp axis to a standstill, as controlling points and signals became impossible. Around 20:00 (Dutch time) ProRail announced that the issue had been resolved, but around...

Examples of vehicles in TOC livery (Not trains)

A few years ago, the railway line between Harlingen and Harlingen Haven (harbour of Harlingen) was closed for a major renewal project. During that time Arriva, who operate that line, ran a rail replacement service with buses which looked like this: (picture of a rail replacement bus sporting...

Keolis Amey Wales - Future Rolling Stock

Interesting to note: the Stadler render shows bodyside cameras. Is this a Stadler thingie, a mistake, or a requirement set by WG/UK gov to maximise rolling stock reusability?

    Avignon to Ashford

That is correct, but after KVB was installed new issues have been identified which can cause serious damage to an e320 train. As far as I am aware the issue is expected to be resolved somewhere around the end of September, but as always: it ain't certain until it's actually happening. Even when...

TRIVIA: Things you saw travelling on mainland European railways that you don't see today

12 locomotives belonging to Baureihe 232 were fitted with ATB so that they could operate services within the Netherlands. Similarly, a couple of NS DM'90 DMUs have been fitted with Indusi so they could be used on services to Aachen.

NTV orders more next gen Pendolinos

Correct, Avelia is the category name for high speed trains. Alstom have the following product categories: Citadis = trams Metropolis = metro's Prima = locomotives X'Trapolis = suburban trains Coradia = regional/IC trains Avelia = high speed (250+ km/h)

    Avignon to Ashford

As far as I'm aware, the e320's aren't cleared for services beyond Paris (yet) so if you're on the direct service you'll be getting an e300 / TMST. These trains can stop at Ashford as the issue which is plaguing the e320's is not a problem for the original Eurostar trains.

NTV orders more next gen Pendolinos

The ETR575 is not a Pendolino, that is an Alstom Avelia AGV very high speed train. Technically capable of 360 km/h, but allowed to go 300 km/h in commercial service. The ETR675 is an Avelia Pendolino, but has non tilting bogies as none of the routes served by those units need tilt.
