    Farewell NS ICR coaches

As-built, the ICR coaching stock had orange benches with plasticky seats. During their midlife refurbishment (2001-2005) the benches were replaced by individual seats - yellow velvet in 2nd class, red leather in 1st. When it became apparent that the new high-speed "Fyra" EMUs would not be...

Pyjama Party to save the NightJet

According to the SNCF press release, that they did not do that has nothing to do with this specific train - but rather SNCF having severed the connection with booking systems of foreign operators for technical reasons. From 2026 they want to have it working again, they're switching to a new...

Pyjama Party to save the NightJet

The answer to that remark probably starts with an F. Flixtrain were preparing to launch 5 routes in France (Paris - Brussels, Paris - Bordeaux, Paris - Lyon, Paris - Toulouse and Paris - Nice (overnight) but postponed those plans when covid hit. Ouigo Train Classique is basically the same...

What train would run Brussels to Belgium?

Belgian loco-hauled stock is quite interesting, all their non-MU stock can work and operate together even in frankly bizarre composition. See this formation for example: M7 double decker car cars, M4 trailer cars, M7 double decker self-propelled end cars... in multiple! :-) Or this one...

Pyjama Party to save the NightJet

The original Ouigo concept started out as an experiment to increase productivity of the existing TGV fleet (higher utilisation, higher capacity) and was quite successful. It also prevented companies like Flixbus from setting up a nationwide long distance bus network, unlike what happened in...

Pyjama Party to save the NightJet

Not quite true, Bombardier's (now Alstom's) TRAXX locomotives have been running in France for more than a decade. Although even back then Bombardier had a production facility in France (Crespin) whereas Siemens do not.

Pyjama Party to save the NightJet

As far as my knowledge goes, ÖBB do not have a safety certificate to operate within France. They also do not have a suitable locomotive for it, hence working together with SNCF.

RFI (Italian Rail Infrastructure Manager) and FS investigated for alleged collusion to try to prevent SNCF from operating in Italy

With historic SNCF I would agree with you, but with present-day SNCF things are different. SNCF Réseau (infra manager) encourages and supports new entrants when it comes to using their infrastructure, SNCF Gares&Connexxions (stations operator) also wants to see more trains in their stations...

Signalling problems Guildford/ Reading / Waterloo 18/07 lines

What are the limits of the area controlled by Basingstoke ROC, and how much of it went down yesterday? When I search for information about what Basingstoke ROC controls, information is hard to find.

[Trivia] slowest passenger train class on the mainline.

Would the 1972 Tube Stock running on the Watford DC line count? Those have a max speed of 45mph according to Wikipedia.

Are Network Rail really this poor?

You're overestimating the intelligence of the general public. A lot of people who trespass aren't aware of the risks. In the Netherlands "spoorlopers" cause up to 4.5 hours of delay minutes every day. By walking along the railway as "a quicker way to get from A to B" because the normal road...

Alstom win order for ten new class 345s

The people in Derby can do a lot more than just assemble stuff, though. A couple of years ago a programme was made showing how raw materials end up getting converted into a Class 720 - well worth a watch! If you can find it still... BBC Two - Inside the Factory, Series 7, Trains

    Is ScotRail rolling stock nationalised?

I believe TfW were looking at outright owning their rolling stock when the franchise was awarded, but in the end a conventional ROSCO type setup turned out to be more financially beneficial - SBMC/Equitix are the parties involved.

Cancelled due to ‘a short notice change to the timetable’

It's not a poor translation, as the Dutch version of the reason is noodzakelijke aanpassing aan de dienstregeling (necessary change to the timetable). NS used to say "due to rolling stock issues" or "due to crewing issues" but they've stopped doing that for their own services in favour of this...

New trains cab ends not painted yellow.

Well, yes and no. The Netherlands used to have a regulation that the front of trains should have a contrast area of at least 1 m² in white or yellow. This rule was abolished around 2010. NS rolling stock introduced after 2010, such as the FLIRT and the SNG, did not have that white/yellow...

    Netherlands train derailment

The Dutch Safety Board have provided their final report about this accident. As is known, the road-rail crane crossed lines which were still in operation. A line block was required for the crane to cross, but this block had not yet been granted. The DSB have been unable to identify the reason...

I Broke My Head on Great Anglia Train

The Stadler trains in Europe are not "exactly like these", as the UK uses unusually high floors (floor 91cm above top of rail) while the rest of the loading gauge is more generous as well. Continental Europe mostly uses 76cm or 55cm, simply leaving more space for headroom.

Transport for Wales Class 231 / 756 Stadler FLIRTs

A while ago I saw the following table with the purchase prices of the new TfW rolling stock. It was posted on Twitter, I saved the image but unfortunately I did not save who posted it so I can't credit anyone.

Track maintenance operation outside the UK

In the Netherlands, ProRail does not have its own 'orange army' like Network Rail does. The country has been divided into 21 lots, and all maintenance and renewal activities for those lots are contracted out and performed by private companies. These companies work based on output driven...
