Last year when I travelled into/out of Liverpool Street I noted that one platform of Bishopsgate Low Level (closed 1916)- is still in situ- in remarkable good condition...! How many other stations closed for over 100 years still have platform(s) in situ..?

On the West Drayton to Staines West branch two small halts Poyle Estate Halt and Colnbrook Estate Halt were built and closed in 1960s with a short life of only a few years. The connection at Staines between the Staines West branch and the SR Staines to Windsor line was built in the 1980s and now...

Trivia: Nearest station you haven't used?

I live in Tonbridge and the nearest station which I have not used is Kemsing which is about 5 miles away directly north from my home. The only time I visited Kemsing was by car as not only would involve two changes but the station is about one and half miles from the village. Also nearby a...

How was the "new normal" pub/cafe experience for you?

I have been to my local 'Spoons in the South East. No one at the door but there was a pile of "track and trace" forms to complete which it appeared no-one was bothering. The previous over generous amount of tables have been thinned out with some persex surrounded booths. As it was quiet I...

Railway 'islands': areas accessible by public roads but only by level crossings.

The only public access road to Dungeness crosses the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway at a level crossing just south of the Pilot Inn which is about a mile north of Dungeness. I believe there is another road connecting through the Nuclear Power Station which is closed to the public.

    Spotting at main line stations

Avoid Guildford as they are insisting you wear a mask whilst on the station. When I was there recently staff were at the station entrance checking and requesting you use the hand wash sanitizers.

Long term implications of suspending ticket checks?

During recent travels around the South East to visit elderly relatives I have only found two stations with ticket barriers in operation- Guildford and Dover Priory. At Guildford the staff seemed more concerned that I had taken my face mask off after leaving the train and was walking along the...

Rail staff facilities: Some TOCs say to be used in an "emergency" only

Railways Act 1993 section 135- https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1993/43/section/135 I fully agree with Merle Haggard (above) that some BR services were restricted to privilege card holders including on some heavily used Monday to Friday peak hour services to and from London.
