    HS2 futureproofing for HS1 link?

The route of the link in London was discussed a couple of months ago in the general HS2 tunnelling thread starting about here: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/hs2-tbm-progress.240683/page-14#post-6968431 I don’t think there was much provision needed in the infrastructure, it’s basically...

    Vertical alignment at East Finchley

It’s not so odd for that possible explanation to come to mind. I was thinking, (probably while you posted), that the central tracks and platforms when built would have been originally designed for mainline stock, coming north from the now abandoned Highgate high level station? Did that route...

Grand Union Trains bought by First Group?

See post #195. @Clarence Yard has stated quite clearly that Grand Union will not be used.

East-West Rail (EWR) countdown to entry into service

That will be fine, I’m sure. I’ve posted quite a few links to videos found on YouTube, and as long as you write a sentence or two explaining that it’s a video about ‘whatever subject’, (noting that your broad subject area is usually already covered by the thread you’re in), and possibly adding...

Grand Union Trains bought by First Group?

Is there any evidence First are going to use the Grand Union brand? I suggest they’ve bought the rights to the services and they won’t be “Grand” anything - if only to avoid confusion with Grand Central.

    Class 33s on Portsmouth-Bristol-Cardiff-Crewe (1980s)

Thanks for quick reply, that makes sense.

    Class 33s on Portsmouth-Bristol-Cardiff-Crewe (1980s)

Can anyone remember if, or how, locos ran round at the Portsmouth Harbour end of the route? I only ever used them west of Fareham back then.

Grand Union Trains bought by First Group?

However there’s never been so much as a whisper of 222s to XC from any official source, has there? I think regular suggestions made in these forums have no effect on decision making.

I think he’s issued the traditional helpful statement about not caring what the fans think… o_O

    Design your own open-access operator

EWR does not provide the infrastructure to allow direct services from Milton Keynes towards Bedford or Cambridge. You’d have to either change at Bletchley, which will already be possible on opening of EWR, or introduce additional services that reverse direction at Bletchley. But EWR only has...

    5 Class 350s Flood Damaged

Was the number 14 in the thread title ever correct? It seems to be fairly clear they're now down to 5 units with significant problems.

Hitachi Factory - First Group order 14 new trains with options for 13 more

Yes, it’s a drop in the ocean really. No, it reads to me ordering more 5 car trains, as in “14 x 5 car”. I suppose therefore that any lengthening of existing HT or Lumo services will be by running them in pairs.

DfT station categories - and which stations need changes to their category

I think it was probably originally intended for internal use only, and adding it to Wikipedia was never necessary or that helpful.

SWR Class 458 to be retained

    They’ll just blame the Treasury…

DfT station categories - and which stations need changes to their category

Would you like to see a copy of the 2009 report where the reasoning is explained? The categories were already around, (maybe only used by DfT), but the 2009 report moved some stations between existing categories.

Was GNER going to operate the South Western Franchise?

It was the parent company of GNER, known as Sea Containers Ltd, that bid unsuccessfully for the second SW franchise in 2001 or about then. They also withdrew from a later competition for SW. I’ve never heard of a possible service joining the two areas. Sea Containers also bid for...

    Extending Thameslink to Corby

This has been regularly proposed in these forums, and I believe the general consensus has always been ”no”, it doesn’t help.

Guardian article on transport minister’s claimed benefits of rail nationalisation

Will ‘working with unions to bring about reform’ perhaps include getting all (or enoug) traincrew to work on Sundays?

Northumberland Line fares (including impact on Tyne & Wear Metro maximum fares)

If you look at the Metro Gold Card issue, AFAICS it’s an add on to the ENCTS card, and normally such add ons are done at county level. But for vast areas of Northumberland the facility is not going to be much use at all, so how does Northumberland justify paying for free Metro/Rail travel for...

Northumberland Line fares (including impact on Tyne & Wear Metro maximum fares)

No. the web page about fares here explicitly states it is not valid towards the end: https://www.northumberlandline.uk/ticketing i think it has a Tyne and Wear residential requirement for the £12 fee and full benefits?
