    Restarting HS2 East

There’s nowhere to provide a track connection at OOC to do the necessary reversal, hasn’t this been mentioned a few times before?

Bakerloo to Heathrow: What is the simplest transfer with least walking?

That’s the same one I’d be thinking of, although I think it’s often forgotten about, maybe it never achieved a high profile back when it opened.

Line into platform 5 at Clapham Junction

Is it the section they’re down to replace during the week’s Christmas block?

East-West Rail (EWR) countdown to entry into service

No. They’re apparently arguing about guards according to the, (probably more relevant), thread about the countdown to service start.

Northern director suggests ”bigger trains coming in December” - what does that mean?

Northern, later: “we tried introducing bigger trains but they’re stuck in a depot”.

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

In the hope of covering two regular topics in one place, I wonder if they’ve considered using this for out of date railcard reminders? o_O :D

Was there any plan for Waterloo > Vauxhall > Queenstown Rd > Clapham Junction to be part of the Underground network?

Except existing line curvature and line gradient to get under the Thames would have automatically ruled out a station at Blackfriars. Even if buildable somewhere flat and straight to modern specs the limited passenger capacity, because trains would be full from Waterloo to Bank, would have meant...

Newhaven Harbour station - Britain's most insalubrious station entrance?

Not since they moved the ferry berth. I’m pretty sure signs and announcements have stated ‘alight at town for ferries’ for years. IIRC it was discussed a few times in the long running thread about closure of the ‘Marine platform’, the change to ferry operations definitely wasn’t recent.

What extensions should be made to the Merseyrail Network?

But it runs mostly over an existing formation that was still open for goods until it finally closed in the 1960s. Only the last few hundred yards into the airport was brand new. Goods traffic as far as Callerton and ICI Prestwick siding was still running occasionally in the mid to late 80s. The...

    Signing Routes after upgrades

I expect they’ll use CGI videos and simulators. If it can be done for London Bridge, especially the Bermondsey flyover changes, I think Huddersfield will be relatively straightforward.

Was there any plan for Waterloo > Vauxhall > Queenstown Rd > Clapham Junction to be part of the Underground network?

The Waterloo and City line doesn’t ‘logically’ extend towards Vauxhall, it curves round to be perpendicular to the mainline platforms, and extending it would have to go through the depot and down towards Elephant and Castle. And at that point it’s almost at local street level, not deep enough...

A scam phone calls and emails discussion.

Just had a rambling text with a short deadline inviting me to apply to some obscure website for a £200-£300 government cost of living award. Looked completely amateurish and bogus, but I guess they’ll trap a few people and that’s all they need.

    Marylebone Wall Siding

I think you’d then have problems with the position of the roof piers, they’d be far too near the platform 2 and 4 edges. I’d be surprised if it hadn’t been investigated and ruled out before. If you look at an aerial view, the eastern main roof is not as wide as the western side, there’s less...

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

Yes - there’s a cross sectional drawing in post #408 in this thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/oxford-corridor-phase-2-platform-5-updates.235423/page-14#post-7135044 So the quick summary is that the new west bound carriageway is centred roughly on the south side existing footpath in...

They’ve suspended the VAR bloke, but that’s little help as it doesn’t ever give you the goal back.

    Steepest Escalator in the UK?

When an escalator gradient is assessed, is it the full end to end distance, or just the angle of the main run, ie do they ignore the flat runoff sections? I expect they’ve increased those lengths over the years for greater safety?

    Yellow fasteners on concrete sleepers?

Lateral restraint anchors, aka lateral resistance plates. Most of it is out of sight, there’s vertical plates attached that you can think of like a small boat‘s keel. Helps retain the track position on curves. There’s a few slightly different designs in use, the Unipart rail catalogue...

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

I think that would be mistaken. The Platform 5 works have always been discussed in this thread, and who’s to say P5 is speculation? Some members being pessimistic doesn’t make something cancelled. The track changes south of Botley Rd for P5 were completed a while ago and are covered in this...
