[Triva] What is the longest rail journey between two stations that use to be directly connected but now aren't?

Interestingly Northern still offer a Yorkshire Coast Day Ranger which includes the Scarborough - Whitby bus. At £25.40 v £22.60 for an anytime day return from Hull to Scarborough it could be good value if you are visiting several places in the one day or going all the way to or from Whitby...

Hull trains to St Pancras this Sunday, 3rd Dec

Due to engineering work on the ECML this Sunday Hull trains are running a reduced service into St Pancras. A few questions and thoughts: Hull trains, as an open access operator obviously find it profitable to organise what is a major diversion rather than just give up or put everyone on...

Open Access Operator for Newark North Gate

When we were in the back half of a 10 carriage to London we were on the Hull side of the crossing when stopped. I think 3 maybe 4 carriages were on the platform.

Open Access Operator for Newark North Gate

Hull trains provide direct London services from quite a few East Yorkshire stations which have no other or few direct London services. I suspect the free (it was last time I looked) parking at Howden is a draw for people from out of the immediate area, and the fact that you dont have town centre...

Should USB-C ports be fitted to trains?

First of all, USB C - USB C cables as used by latest phones to charge can be fitted with an adapter to plug in to a USB A charging socket and will charge quite happily, all be it at a slower rate depending upon socket capability. The issue comes if you need the higher USB PD spec charging...

[Triva] What is the longest rail journey between two stations that use to be directly connected but now aren't?

Malton (National rail) to Pickering (NYMR) must be up there with Scarborough - Whitby, as much of the route is the same, and an extra change at Grosmont to travel south to Pickering. Distance by rail was around 11 miles prior to closure. Or another thought, Scarborough to Pickering, the direct...

Open Access Operator for Newark North Gate

Open access operators will only attempt to get a call at Newark added if they think its worth their while, i.e. will add to profits. Its well outside the Lumo market, who are aiming at the low cost London - Edinburgh market. Of the remainder of OA operators, Hull Trains already call at Retford...

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

If you were prepared to spend a lot of money you could build a new station immediately to the east of King X with new tunnels linking it in to the existing HS1 tunnels roughly under Caledonian Road overground station. This could then be used for HS1 domestic services, and the space freed up in...

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

I think it depends who owns them, if as I suspect its Eurostar then keeping them going for a few more years makes sense, after they will paid for and written off from a financial point of view. If they are leased then when the lease expires it depends how much the leasing company want to charge...

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

If they are replaced I doubt they will be either UK loading gauge compatible or 750v DC third rail capable. The 373s have had their 750dc capability removed anyway. I am not sure actually owns them, are they leased?, but at around 30 years old they must have paid for themselves, so maybe keep...

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

I would agree, the only other possibility would be a low cost option from Ebbsfleet or Ashford to Lille, with through ticketing from London via HS1 domestic services, and onwards from Lille maybe using OiuGo the low cost SNCF operation, but unless the savings are enough people will either pay up...

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

Exactly what I was thinking, and illustrates that for onward travel outside London St Pancras is the best option, and even within London its got good underground services and other connections, In a sense its a victim of its own success. Unfortunately the same one asylum seekers ignore, when...

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

I think the issue is a lot of (most?) people want to travel to St Pancras, so the only way you will encourage them to change is through price differential. It would also mean a duplication of St Pancras facilities. Or you will find a proportion of the Stratford seats are unsold. Also the extra...

End of the line for Paris’ iconic metro ticket

I think its less important as you buy a day ticket (or multi day) which is prepaid, so if you dont use the ticket to pass into out of the system the system doesn't care as long as you have a ticket valid at that point if checked. I think when your pass is read when you board a bus or tram the...

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

'Planned' in the UK, you must be joking surely. Takes cynical hat off. What was seen as adequate at the time of construction is now at capacity due to a number of things making train travel to the continent more attractive Problems at UK airports, and the often poor experience that results...

Dutch start-up proposes cross-channel service to compete with Eurostar.

All these proposals suffer from the same fatal flaw, lack of space and facilities at St Pancras, until that can be addressed I do not see how any additional services can operate. Services could use a different starting point in the UK, but the reason Eurostar is running at capacity a lot of the...

    Bridlington rationalisation and re-signalling

There has been some more relaying with new track between Bridlington and Bempton at the end of last month, and there seems to be some ongoing work north of Bempton towards Speeton.

Oldest building still in railway use on the national network

Interesting, I wasnt aware of the SIR until a few years ago even although I was interested in railways and history, and I was brought quite close to its route I lived in South London until 1980, but the SIR seemed to have never made it into local history, probably because it closed 40-50 years...

Oldest building still in railway use on the national network

Doesn't meet OP requirements, but interesting to note that Mitcham station building dates to the days of the Surrey Iron Railway, built around 1800. Hasnt been a station building for many years, and now on Tram Link rather than national rail, but still quite a curosity.
