In The Netherlands I find NS to be hit and miss. Just like here really. The Arriva services up Groningen way I've never seen ticket inspections on, but the Arriva services out of Arnhem I've had several. Don't think I've ever been checked on a TGV, though I don't think I've ever boarded one...

You don't get change. I had an ATW guard once that when I handed over an RTV and cash for the remainder refused to give me change "as I used an RTV". An email to customer services got that one resolved. I wanted the change from the note I'd used in addition to the RTV, not the other way round

I flashed my wildly off route advance tickets at Peterborough last week and said I was nipping to the shop. (Which I was!) Let out and back in no problem. My tickets were Crewe-Euston and Liverpool Street-Harwich advances. Said I'd had to divert and it was no problem at all.
