    Ticket Awareness at Piccadilly Manchester

No-one, in this particular case. The poster mentioned that attempts to use card readers both on the train and platform had failed. To my mind this gives him some reason to be taken at his word - you are perhaps mixing this up with situations where people are expecting to be taken at their word...

Getting off train early on Advanced ticket

Whilst acknowledging that this is all academic (:D) is written permission going to happen, ever? What exactly is the guard going to write?

    London Midland Penalty Fare

This thread has become incredibly good. Please let me know of the stations where an ill-timed knock on the window causes Michael Douglas in "Falling Down" to emerge from the back room. I have got to go and watch.

    London Midland Penalty Fare

I wonder if the generic anti-TOC crusaders will jump on this one? I somehow doubt it since their fire is often misplaced, but I'd think they have grounds here. You might be right, but if so - that seems harsh to me. At face value this is much more convincing than much of the stuff often...

Penalty fared for travelling on a child ticket

I wasn't actually insinuating that you were being huffy. The bolded bit is precisely the point. One problem in this "debate" is the (deliberate) conflation of situations where staff should be able to ascertain validity themselves (e.g. your Routeing Guide example) where situations where they...

Penalty fared for travelling on a child ticket

Not just that. It's also a sensible suggestion considering that expecting to be simply taken at your word is often (if you'll pardon the pun) somewhat childish. Yes, there are plenty of these cases. There are also plenty of cases that end up in dispute because, and only because, the TOC...

Intercity trains on stopping services: big potential for fare evasion?

It's not policed much at all and is really more of a means of making an honour system work more smoothly.

Denied travel at Paddington in the evening peak despite holding a valid ticket

Sounds like a recipe for free travel. Turn up an hour before you actually want to leave, argue with the cretins for an hour, hey presto - compo claim.

    Strange practice on NSB (Norway)

Absolutely bizarre. (I live in Norway). You should perhaps bear in mind that route structures are much simpler and fewer in number than typical for the UK. In particular there are far fewer variations in stopping pattern (so a train to X will pretty much always stop at A, B, C, D and E)...

FIP Pass: Oslo Airport to Downtown

There are actually two trains per hour most of the day, most days (43 and 03 from Gardermoen) which are barely any slower than the hideously overpriced "express".

    Anchorage, Alaska

Via Seattle I would think. SeaTac is Alaska Airlines' main hub (in the lower 49).

    Facebook Changes Summer 2013

Oh dear. As others have commented above, I tend to be one of those terrible Luddites as regards changes which I later get used to and mostly like. That said, the new one looks especially wanky-Windows-8-ey and I, of course, hate it.

    Twitter usage poll

It's a bit like the iPad. Many people seem to love it but as far as I can see it completely lacks a USP.

    Thames Clipper Commute

I used it daily for about 10 years... and would still often stand at the exact point on the platform at Bank to get in the front doors of the front carriage :)

    Thames Clipper Commute

I never commuted on it as the DLR was on my doorstep. If the latter is in range it's probably better. The Clippers are great, though.

    Middle lane driving: your views?

In the interests of fairness and equity, I do perceive that roadworks and the speed limits therein are pretty well observed. I am also impressed at how well variable speed limits seem to be observed and to work where I have seen them implemented (on the M25 when traffic is heavy). If I saw...

    Middle lane driving: your views?

I think we can all agree that many (most?) drivers are dimwits behind the wheel. I am therefore somewhat puzzled as to why we should implicitly accept drivers' discretion and judgment as to what is the appropriate speed. Precisely because they're pretty incapable of discretion or judgment. I...

    Aviation Discussion

Doubtful on Norwegian. They do have a FF scheme but they are really a low-cost carrier - albeit a high-quality one, but unfortunately not one that is currently at all competitive in the UK-Norway market :( I expect almost no-one takes the Norway-UK connecting flights, but it doesn't cost...

Buying a ticket at the 'first available opportunity'

How many threads in Disputes and Prosecutions (which is a rarefied atmosphere that magnifies and brings into focus issues relating to ticketing irregularities) are about anything remotely like this? The answer is very very few, if any. If you actually look through the threads in D&P there is...

    FOR vs SOR fare

Swindon to Newport S.Wales from BRfares: FOR = £133 SOR = £26.20 Ratio = 5.08:1. Both Any Permitted, both set by FGW. I was staggered by this. Am I missing anything in terms of restrictions or other factors? Are there (many) other flows for which we see such a differential...
