Greater Anglia passenger response goes viral

RUK In Po-Facedness Shocker I am completely aware I am personally as capable of po-facedness as the next man from time to time

Ticket Vending Machine - Card Only

Of interest, perhaps, but mostly useless. They mostly contain confident (yet incorrect) assertions of what's what, based on what people think is reasonable rather than the actual position. The answer to the OP's question is "no". More accurately, what people consider is moot; it is not a...

Starting short on Caledonian sleeper ticket?

Oh it physically goes to Edinburgh all right (as do all three Highland portions). If you're seated from Fort William you have to move coaches. It's just that I'm not sure boarding there is permitted.

Starting short on Caledonian sleeper ticket?

Unless I'm mistaken Edinburgh is not a booked (public) stop on the Highland. I'm not sure you can join it at all from Edinburgh. For sure there is shunting around both of stock and passengers, but still...

Station has ticket facilities despite being advertised as not - purchase on-train OK?

Does entitle - clearly no. Byelaws refer to facilities in working order, not the advertising / signposting thereof. The only caveat is in 18/3 (ii) about a notice at the station permitting board without buy. Should entitle - trickier. Discretion will often be shown in practice, one supposes...

Some railway stations used by 'fewer than 30' people

That is quite an extraordinary level of fail in just a few lines of reportage.

Permission to buy on board train

I agree that complaining seems more likely to make the OP's lot worse, rather than better, in the long run. I would also suggest that many in the OP('s wife's) position would have let this go with a shrug and a puff of the cheeks. I really don't think it's anything to have got worked up about...

Permission to buy on board train

This is a really odd thread. 90% of threads on here are about bleating against the TOCs where the passenger has not been allowed to take the p**s, quite frankly. Here we have a ridiculous anti-passenger line and the usual suspects are sticking up for the guard! You lot sure are weird.

Buying tickets on trains - which companies allow this and which ones don't?

In a nutshell: With the possible exception of the open access operators mentioned above, never assume that you can buy on board where pre-board purchase opportunities exist. It doesn't matter what any poster, promotional material, website or flyer says, how you interpret it, or how you...

Wrongly accused of overwritten carnet by FCC

One might be able to make the argument fly for the "3" but without some serious expert input I think one would struggle with it for the "0" or the "2".

"Officially relegated" in this context is an oxymoron.

    Testing experience at Paddington

[slight pedantry but ho hum] This is something of a strawman. The issue was not "sell at all" it was "sell without question". [/pedant]

Unable to buy "Anytime" tickets at machine

Pound to a penny you'd want a refund of the difference if the TVM charged you too much, and rightly so.

First Great Western On Board Wifi

... agreed, except I'd add the latter is a barely credible option, particularly on long-distance services, in 2013.

Unable to buy "Anytime" tickets at machine

What's fault got to do with anything? It surely isn't going to happen in practice, but there could surely be no complaint about being excessed to the correct fare. If the TVM were broken altogether and there were no other ticket-buying facilities available (no fault of the customer) there...

    Bushey to Shepherds Bush

So if I read the above right, you could use Watford Junction if you have PAYG credit on your Oyster effectively by saying "I would use PAYG if I were to exit there". So by the same token does this mean a Z2-6 (say) is OK for traversing Z1 if you have PAYG credit on it?

PF from station I didn't start at

Whilst this is trivially true, a TOC and/or its RPIs are on pretty shaky ground if the (non-)provision of information to which they are not entitled makes a material difference to the application of their "discretion". In practice such will usually be unproven and unproveable, of course, but...

    Britrail pass question

I find it a bit difficult to imagine an itinerary over a month that makes a consecutive Britrail worth it, but not an extra 250 quid for First. I live outside the UK and cannot wait for a free month time-wise to emerge (not happening any time soon).

Wigan playing at Wembley: no late enough train back for Wigan fans

I would guess that "loads" means single figures percent of the crowd, maybe a dozen trains carrying 500 people each. It simply doesn't represent a very significant lobby in terms of scheduling and the like. I think we would all prefer this not to be the case, but that's how it is. Similarly I...

Wigan playing at Wembley: no late enough train back for Wigan fans

This thread has got rather silly. Rail is simply not a factor in this, and given the tiny proportion of fans that would travel by rail even if it were possible, it probably shouldn't be a factor. Sacrilege to say on a rail forum, but it simply doesn't matter here.
