Things you don’t see outside any more

Following on from the ‘Things that used to be commonplace in the home’ thread, shall we continue with the nostalgia? This was inspired by this quote: and I remember there used to be a lot of public Gents urinals, which were little more than a wall, with a bit of a curved entrance so people...

No 10 rule breaking gatherings during 2020.

Lady Dick of Stockwell? Sounds like one of those cards you used to find in London phone boxes.

Omicron variant and the measures implemented in response to it

Does anybody else know a lot of people who have had sniffles, perhaps a bit of a cough over Xmas, and it turned out to be Covid? I know at least six, including myself, and I wouldn’t have even called it a cold. Perhaps as more people get it or know people who had it, this ‘killer virus’ thing...

Omicron variant and the measures implemented in response to it

I could have been your friend. Exactly the same happened to me and so I missed three days teaching.

Jeesh, I thought it was a ****ty. You’re my besht mate, you are. EDIT: Viva La Rail UK swearing filter - yet it let you get away with Scunthorpe! :D

    New Cities

I think it’s to do with Shakespeare and the pillars of rhetoric. Think how easy it is to say The city of Doncaster rather than The town (minute awkward pause, or unnecessary extension of last word, which also emphasises its lowly status) of Doncaster Sorry, I’ve been drinking Leffe.

    Daft school rules

Thinking back to my school…erm, what are ‘tracksuit bottoms’ and, seriously, when were they invented? I am trying very hard to remember if our PE teachers wore them, and in my head I can only remember them in shorts. This is 1971-8. Edit: Did Brian Glover wear one in Kes, which was about...

    Vaccine Progress, Approval, and Deployment

I would expect the demographics of Barton on Sea to influence the high take up. Having been there, isn’t it full of old people (and I am one myself)? No doubt a Hampshire member can elucidate.

The Brigg Line: is there anything that can be done?

If Northern have to run a parliamentary service over the line, the way they have done it is quite canny and will probably minimise the loss. Shopping opportunities in Sheffield or Grimsby all year round for Kirton Lindsey and Brigg; a summer Saturday out in Cleethorpes for anyone from Darnall to...

Which heavy rail lines might be converted to light rail (including tram-train) to help meet the Treasury/DfT's financial targets post-Covid?

I think I agree with you, but why would any work need doing between Ashburys and Glossop? The point of a tram train is that it can do both. The service from Glossop is a train, using, say, 399s with high boarding instead of the current 323s, then a tram from Ashburys-ish when it goes on the...

Omicron variant and the measures implemented in response to it

I don’t think @jumble meant it quite like that. If you have symptoms, you should get a PCR, but I don’t see any harm in taking a LFT first to confirm or question your suspicions. At the moment the ‘official’ symptoms are still fever; a continuous cough; loss of senses. However, many omicron...

Which heavy rail lines might be converted to light rail (including tram-train) to help meet the Treasury/DfT's financial targets post-Covid?

Thanks, I never realised that. In the UK, at least, I associate ‘funicular’ with cliff railways like Scarborough and Babbacombe, whereas the one at Llandudno looks like a tram! Every day is a learning day.

No sorry Dale. If it is a near anagram of the first three words, that is a remarkable coincidence.
