Why were the ex Central Trains Turbostar routes transferred to XC in the first place?

DfT decided so it went with XC. There were various discussions about an extra operator at New Street if the route went to EMT) (now EMR). These concerns came up again recently when the EMR franchise was being considered. You could make a case that the Birmingham-Leicester stoppers should be...

Acceleration on Class 803 (LUMO) vs Class 802?

Out of curiosity, how would 2 X 5 car 801/1 perform on diesel?

Acceleration on Class 803 (LUMO) vs Class 802?

Happy to be corrected but I'm pretty sure the 9 car 801s operated on diesel when there was overhead wire damage at Finsbury Park earlier in the year.

    December 2021 Timetable change

In the early years of the VHF timetable the 1430 was also a 5 car Voyager Mondays to Thursdays. On a Friday the Voyager did an extra 1333 departure to Lancaster with the 1430 being a Pendolino and extended through to Glasgow.

Settle and Carlisle availability for diversions nowadays

I doubt we'll see the S&C used for WCML diversions again. No AWC/TPE crews sign it anymore. The 20 AWC voyagers are soon to be replaced by 11 Hitachi Class 805s meaning AWC will have even less trains capable of using the route. The practise of bussing passengers up and down the M6 is well...

Alternatives to HS2 (East) between East Midlands Parkway and Sheffield

A few dozen freight. Plus there are the odd passenger services that use the "old road" via Beighton to Sheffeld.

Lumo - new Open Access operator on the East Coast Main Line

I've watched a fair few of the Lumo review videos and in most of them there is luggage in the doorways and the bike racks crammed full of luggage. For those on here who have travelled with Lumo is the lack of luggage space a big a problem as it appears on the YouTube videos? Using the bike...

Lumo - new Open Access operator on the East Coast Main Line

A 9 car Lumo would, based on the current layout, have 770 seats. Do you reckon Lumo could fill them with enough passengers to pay for the extra leasing/access costs that a 9 car incurs? Some Lumo service use platforms 9/10 at Kings Cross (max 160 metre trains), and also double occupy platforms...

Settle and Carlisle availability for diversions nowadays

Back in Virgin Cross Country days, some of the Birmingham-Manchester-Scotland services got diverted from Bolton via Darwen to Blackburn, then Hellifield and Carlisle. Most services however were routed preston-Blackburn-Hellifield-Carlisle. I don't recall the Carnforth-Hellifield line ever being...

Ideas for more services like Lumo on the UK rail network?

Some interesting links on that list... Edinburgh-Liverpool would have been hourly had the TPE service not been canned north of Newcastle, though I suspect that the list refers to WCML route. Leeds-Leicester. When National Express operated MML they ordered the 9 car 222s with a view to...

Lumo - new Open Access operator on the East Coast Main Line

1053 ex Edinburgh Lumo was 19 late from Newcastle, only lost 3 minutes en route to Kings Cross arriving 22 late. Considering the disruption it had a pretty decent run.
