Shepherd Market has been called the "village centre" of Mayfair. The current buildings date from around 1860, and house food and antique shops, pubs and restaurants. The market had a reputation for high-class prostitution. In the 1980s, Jeffrey Archer was alleged to frequent the area and was...

Even more widespread disruption across the UK rail network - what can be done?

They may have also been affected. I was thinking back to the BBC documentary from 1991. All the Class 91 fleet was taken out of service and you saw diesel hauled Mk4 stock with the driver wearing a bin bag to reduce the draught. link to YouTube. BBC Inside Story documentary.

Why can't EMR trains cope with heat? (25 & 26 May)

Not helped today by "signalling problems" between Grantham and Nottingham. My train, already 11 minutes late, departing Grantham, was about 40 minutes late arriving at Nottingham.

I suppose it makes a change from the railway companies buying up.the "competition" and subsequently closing them. As an aside, we also saw railway companies operating/owning bus companies.

Fave TOC that no longer exists

Arguably BR. Fair enough, it wasn't always rosy, but you had proper loco hauled trains, longer trains, and if needed additional stock or relief trains that could be utilised. A far cry from the problems we seem to see more and more these days, judging by the numerous threads on these forums...

Fate of lever frames in demolished signal boxes

It's varied over the years. S&T tend to salvage parts they may need, block indicators, signal repeaters etc, but in other cases the demolition teams have shown no regard for saving required parts and just demolished boxes with most equipment still inside. Most annoying.

    Oddball Journeys (Trivia)

There also used to be a Skegness to Aberystwyth. I doubt you had many through passengers enduring a whole trip on a Class 153. You can now get a Liverpool Lime Street to Sleaford train on a Saturday. Previously it was Nottingham to Sleaford, but the service was formed off an inbound unit from...

Signal areas controlled by NX panels

Based of locations I formerly worked the scope of the LCP was limited. Whilst in 'normal' operating mode they had control of signals protecting level crossings, the routes could be overridden by the respective controlling PSB. However, when 'local control' was taken, it gave the signaller at...

Even more widespread disruption across the UK rail network - what can be done?

I'm led to believe that many of the unit issues have been due to radiator fans getting clogged with pollen. Thus causing problems / failures. It could be suggested that the rail industry doesn't procure units that are able to cope with such differing temperature conditions.

    ECML disruption - Darlington 22/05/26

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

Well, that's a bit bizarre. You would think the units were built to the same body style, even if they're different lengths. o_O Then again, it depends what the operator asked for.
