Stations with "platforms" which could in principle be used but (almost) never are

Platform 12 at Newcastle Central is quite amusing. Track is in place, OHLE in place, all signage and even the information display. Only thing missing is the points connecting the rails to the rest of the network!

Scotrail should have procured battery EMU trains, instead of electrifying the East Kilbride branch

DMUs will still be running to Kilmarnock after EK is completed.

1955 WCML electrification: what got dropped?

The often discussed Glasgow North Station and the lesser know Glasgow South Station were part of the Bruce Report, not the Inglis Report. The Bruce report was a dreadful, radical proposal effectively demolishing most of Central Glasgow, including Central, St Enoch and Buchanan Street Stations...

1955 WCML electrification: what got dropped?

There was no shortage of unit storage on the Glasgow Suburban Electrification! This old website has the original plans that can be downloaded. http://homepages.enterprise.net/iainlogan/railway/gsetk.html

1955 WCML electrification: what got dropped?

The major difference I notes between the initial phases of the WCML and the later extensions to Glasgow was that there were some locations where there was very little track rationalisation (eg Crewe) so there seemed to be a lot of wires put up over odd spurs and sidings, whereas North of Weaver...

1955 WCML electrification: what got dropped?

Wired purely for stabling stock, in the old timetable there was one train a day that ran ECS to Bothwell Branch Sidings then formed a morning westbound peak service from Shettleston. The branch was one of many locations used to store the EMUs during their period of withdrawal in 1961.

Stations with "platforms" which could in principle be used but (almost) never are

Stranraer platform 2, signalbox is switched out so station is effectively the end of one long siding

Scotrail should have procured battery EMU trains, instead of electrifying the East Kilbride branch

Personally I can't see this happening. The SNP administration will not want headlines in the press alleging poor transport planning and wasteful spending if diesel train are running when the line goes live in December 2025, only 5 months before the next Scottish election. They will insist that...

    East Kilbride/Barrhead electrification updates

Found an old map on the NLS site https://maps.nls.uk/view/216546782 "Map showing the authorised and proposed extensions to railway lines in the West of Scotland, 1896-1897". I had known for a while that there had been a proposal for a branch to Eaglesham, but I didn't realise that the proposal...

Modern History: Sectarianism ever an issue?

It was certainly an issue! Until relatively recently, few if any Catholics were in the Masons in Scotland, and there was definately the "funny handshake" element when being interviewed for promotions. I worked in a steel mill and the supervisory and management grades were almost exclusively...

trivia songs that mention trains/ railways

"She caught the Katy" by the Blues Brothers. Took me a while to find out what this referred to but the "Katy" is the KT, a short form of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad.

Locos that never hauled a passenger train

Here is the list of services expected to run that day, think it pretty much kept to plan except for the 26s which failed in the morning and spent the rest of the day parked up at Preston. Anything described as Vice DMU was a scheduled service. The underlined services were what I planned to...

Railways that were built in the 20th century (pre HS1)

Mentioned earlier, but brings to mind the other Military Port at Faslane which was also built during WW2, this also had a branch line linking it with the West Highland Line.

Locos that never hauled a passenger train

'Speed Whiskers' on Type AM3 (Later class 303) Electric Multiple Units.

Surely the most nonstandard OHLE masts are on the Neilston branch with its German style concrete masts!

'Speed Whiskers' on Type AM3 (Later class 303) Electric Multiple Units.

From what I have researched, all 311s were delivered with the yellow cab door, some 303s were initially repainted rail blue with full yellow ends including cab door, here is 040 at Motherwell http://www.eastbank.org.uk/images/Units/UK0216.jpg Not sure how many 303s were given yellow cab doors...
