Non Gatwick Express units on Airport Express services

All of the 387/1 and 387/2 and 387/3 units are part of one common pool. There are no separate diagrams. It is completely random which end up on which. It is very common for the London to East Coastway services to be majority Gatwick Express branded units and the Gatwick Express services to be...

I Squared Capital - Arriva UK BUS

This new Arriva website is a complete and utter mess. Here are just some of the problems: It features multiple routes that no longer exist. 477 in Kent. 508 in Hertfordshire. 508A in Hertfordshire. I am not sure how nobody noticed this. They have been withdrawn for months. I am sure there are...

Trivia - Bus routes which change countries

One interesting border that has not been mentioned yet is France and Netherlands which have cross border local bus routes. Saint Martin (France) and Sint Maarten (Netherlands) are located in the Caribbean and are part of the same island and the border goes through the island. There are two local...

Kenya and Uganda News - February 2026

Does anyone know what the new CAF DMU units in Uganda are being used for. Uganda Railways announced last year that they had ordered 20 of them. They will be 20 units with 5 coaches each making 100 coaches total. The artists impression makes them look more like high capacity metro units for...

    Service T15 London

Their facebook page has posts from the 1/2/3 March 2026 just five weeks ago showing the T15 still running. On their website the FAQ page still mentions the T15 service. I can not find any post mentioning it being withdrawn. So i assume that it is still running but it is rather odd that the page...

Ticket scanning / On-board sales commission

Even on the North Downs Line they have many stations with no ticket machines at all (Betchworth, Dorking West, Chilworth, Gomshall, Sandhurst). Plus dozens of other stations on the North Downs Line only have card only ticket machines meaning that cash users must purchase onboard (Blackwater...

Ticket scanning / On-board sales commission

Yes they get both commissions. If a guard sells a PRT ticket and then scans the same PRT ticket they sold then it means that they get both commission rates. So this would be either 3%/4%/5%/6% (whatever that TOC gives) for the ticket sale and then an additional 2p for the scan.

Eurostar - delay on 17.56 service from Brussels-Midi to London yesterday 12 April 2026

Which is an appalling rate. Eurostar have the most expensive fares but yet the worst Delay Repay rates. On our domestic trains you get a full 100% refund if you are delayed by 60 minutes or more. But yet on Eurostar you just get a tiny 25% refund for a 60 minutes delay.

    TV TOC adverts

Another one is the Birmingham Trams (West Midlands Metro) which have Wes and Mindy who are muppets like the Eleanor adverts that LNER have. They have been using these Wes and Mindy muppets adverts a lot recently to promote the new tram line extension that just opened. I wonder...

Trivia - Bus routes which change countries

I am just looking at this border now and it seems that the France and Spain border has at least eight cross bus local bus routes currently: • Route 15 - Hendaye (FR) to Irun (ES) - operated by a French based bus company as part of the French Basque "Txik Txak" network • Route 14 - Hendaye (FR)...

[SE/FI] Updated: Haparanda - Tornio trains funded, expected to start 2026

I doubt that will happen. If they want the Helsinki to Kolari and Kolari To Helsinki sleeper trains to stop at Tornio then it would have to reverse there. It is a locomotive hauled train so it would either have to be top and tailed with a locomotive at each end or the locomotive would have to...

Ticket scanning / On-board sales commission

Do you know what commission that the Conductors and Train Managers at GWR currently get? Is it still 1% (below £1,000 in that month) and 5% (above £1,000 in that month) or has it increased to a flat 5% for all ticket sales to match what the Ticket Examiners get?

Ticket scanning / On-board sales commission

There was a period from around 2016 to 2020 when those Gatwick Express red ticket stock CCST tickets also had the barcodes printed on them. I never really understood the point as most staff did not have barcode readers and most ticket barriers were not fitted with barcode readers back then.

[SE/FI] Updated: Haparanda - Tornio trains funded, expected to start 2026

Just curious why they have authorised trains from both countries when only Finnish trains are likely to cross the border? Is there actually any chance that Swedish trains will run to Tornio again? I think i heard that they removed the standard gauge platform at Tornio station?

Ticket scanning / On-board sales commission

I believe that the old rate of 5% (for below £200 a week) and 10% (for above £200 a week) only applies for any Bletchley / Northampton / Watford guards who were employed before 11/02/2026. Any newly employed Bletchley / Northampton / Watford guards get the new 6% rate if they were employed after...

Ticket scanning / On-board sales commission

Southern do not give their Conductors or OBSs any commission for scanning tickets. But they do get commission for sales. OBSs get a flat 50p per ticket. Conductors get 5% (rising to 8% for the rest of the month once £2,000 worth of tickets have been sold in that month). Conductors also get the...

“Extreme day trippers” on the rise

These extreme day trips are a fantastic way to visit countries and save money on hotels. I have done day trips to many different countries. The hotel costs can be very expensive. If you time it right and the flight timetables work out well then you can depart in the early morning and arrive back...

Why do so many local authorities want to introduce bus franchising instead of municipal operators.

Why does every local authority these days seem to want bus franchising now instead of municipal operators? What is the benefit of chosing bus franchising instead of just setting up a municipal operator to run all buses? All of the following areas are either franchised or are having franchising...

    Least disappointing new Rolling Stock?

I would easily say that the Desiro City class 700/707/717 are my least dissapointing rolling stock. They unfairly get a lot of criticsm but i think they are fantastic. They far exceeded my expectations. They are easily my favourite UK train to travel on. They are extremely spacious. Extra wide...

Trivia: Free bus routes that still exist today.

How many free bus routes still exist in the UK in 2026 today. There was a thread a couple of years ago about these but it seems that these are getting even rarer now. So many have been now withdrawn. At one point almost every town seemed to have a free bus running around the centre. I am only...
