It was more likely Sheff U, who have just beaten Crystal Palace 3-1 away.

Trivia: cathedrals, abbeys and castles which can be seen from trains

You can just about see Sheffield Cathedral spire from the run in from Meadowhall but you have to know what you are looking for, as it doesn’t stand out much. I literally looked two minutes ago.

Network Rail Comms Director ‘work harder at school’ comment

Spoke to an RMT member tonight. He hasn’t made his mind up which way to vote yet, but he considered the news about the bonus would sway him more than the daft remarks.

What could public transport do to encourage leisure journeys?

All of the above seem to be aimed at people who are already at stations or on a rail website. Not necessarily bad, but not attracting new custom. In any case, until staff and infrastructure are sorted out, do we want to attract new leisure users to a potentially disappointing experience?

    Annoying television adverts...

Really, meerkats should have a South African accent, but I suppose in world terms it’s like having a Brummie accent in the UK. (Runs for cover!)

    Annoying television adverts...

Old people like me and you will remember the comedian Stanley Baxter. He did a spoof advert saying ‘Dettox kills 99% of all known germs!’ Stanley appeared dressed as a germ (though it looked like a spider) and said, in his beautiful Scottish accent, ‘As a germ, I am not well-known.’

We get the National Express West Midlands ‘Platinum’ 50 service from there at 1934 to Birmingham Digbeth coach station arriving at 1952 on Saturday evening.

    Food prices

The only two brands I would consider ‘superior’ to own brands are Bisto Gravy Granules and Domestos bleach. It will be a sad day for me when you can’t get these for a quid at cheap shops. The gravy is definitely better, but the bleach might be a perception.

Erm…depends how clumsy you are on the toilet. Anybody been to Poundland recently? Not picking on them as it’s the same everywhere, but it should really be called £1.25land.

Manchester Photograph — Any Ideas of the Location?

Somewhat OT, but my friends and I used to play hide-and-seek in LS Lowry’s back garden. He had a housekeeper to look after his daily needs, but his large garden was a jungle. He was well known and respected in the village of Mottram, and people would say ‘Good Morning, Mr Lowry’ and he would...

    Medical incidents on board trains

As somebody said, the defibrillator does give very clear instructions, but in an emergency it is sometimes hard to keep a clear head, especially if you are unfamiliar. I’m glad I’ve been trained. One thing that I wasn’t clear on - and I wished I’d asked more about at the time - was that it...

What tune does your local ice cream van play ?

‘Oranges and Lemons say the bells of St Clement’s’ here in Sheffield, though when I was a kid in the 60s, Fairclough’s of Stalybridge were much more highbrow and played ‘The Merry Widow’.

Maesteg bus station closed to majority of services due to safety incident

Manchester Chorlton St coach station had a banksman last time I used it. On the other hand Barnsley does not: there is no reason for people to be behind the buses, and the area for reversing is very large.

Indeed, he did not drive. I lived in Mottram and my dad and I got on the same bus as him when I was five.

Will Eurostar get competition? Getlink plans to purchase 10 sets for use by rivals for Channel Tunnel

Perhaps they ditched the through tickets because few people used them and it was more trouble than it was worth? There is a tale -I don’t know if it’s true - that only eight through tickets from Leeds were sold in a whole year. I find it unlikely as me and two friends managed 16 in a year from...
