The shape of the hole in the pictures from my perspective looks like all of the material is failing / starting to fail, looks like some sort metal sheet sitting on top of the beams to hold the track up, I'm guessing that'll need replacing ?

Trains can terminate anywhere, then run empty, if necessary. Not likely in this scenario but as an example a train could develop a door fault at long Eaton, or some other problem potentially being a safety issue if there was an emergency, so the train has to continue without passengers. Etc

Managed to see this at Brighton today. Its first day in service in its new livery, was not a particularly good one. The heat caused many issues across the Brighton mainline and the train was 30+ late into Brighton, and some Thameslink later than 50 mins late into Brighton. A fantastic combo...

No test trains run at all on the seaford branch during daylight hours / before 10pm, the only test trains are midnight (73s) and 2am (37s). Seafords are every half an hour except for those two workings which result in seaford missing a service and being one train in an hour. No other trains...
