Grand Central 19:48 Kings Cross 'piggy in the middle' at Wakefield Kirkgate problem

Yes, looks to be scheduled to arrive at Kirkgate around 21:41 looking at some of the data for the May timetables...excellent :)

Local services operated by 'express' stock for operational convenience

Not sure if a Northern 195 can be counted as 'express' stock but I've found particulary towards the end of the night seem to cover the Leeds - Sheffield via Castleford 'stopper' service which is presumably more an operational thing to get them parked up at Sheffield for the next morning? Also...

Since when has there been a 20:36 Leeds - Derby service operated by EMR?

Perhaps I've been living under a rock (to be fair working from home I probably have!) but I was rather surprised to see at Leeds the other day there now seems to be a 20:36 service to Derby operated by East Midlands Railway! Seemed a bit of an odd one considering Derby is already quite well...

Best use of free single Northern ticket

I have a question regarding these (sorry to invade the thread!) I've given my friend one as we're travelling next Saturday and they'll be getting on at the stop before me, so I've filled it out for them in advance - presumably they won't face any issues in the ticket being issued under my name...

Trains told to get rid of torrent of 'Tannoy spam'

Funnily enough things seem to be getting worse! Northern have knocked up a new ‘We are now on the approach to Leeds if you have large luggage or pushchairs please use the wide access gates to exit’ (so basically just common sense!) Then at Leeds after announcing a train cancellation ‘you may...

Royal Mail to introduce barcoded postage stamps

One thing I've never really understood about Royal Mail is how they completely and utterly missed the boat on the boom in online parcels until it was far too late They are fantastic for sending a letter from Land's End to John o' Groats for less than a quid but I sold a medium sized parcel on...

    Most painful 'minor' injury/injuries?

I think the only time I have been in hospital was for a hernia operation - they knocked me out for that so I didn't feel a thing until the magic wore off and then OWWWWW for a couple of weeks! I also brushed against a nettle or something once which somehow caused my right foot and lower leg to...

Grand Central 19:48 Kings Cross 'piggy in the middle' at Wakefield Kirkgate problem

I know you never please everybody with timetables and connections but recently I've been travelling to and from London and found the 19:48 Grand Central departure of particular annoyance in relation to the arrival time at Wakefield Kirkgate :- Kirkgate - Knottingley departs at 21:46 from...

Trains told to get rid of torrent of 'Tannoy spam'

Just been on a Southern service from Victoria to Clapham Junction…a 5 minute trip and the auto announcer must have repeated around 7 times in that period! Just to top it off the on board supervisor did a manual announcement too!

27th January - Plan B easing - observations and usage

Grand Central still asking passengers to wear face coverings ‘out of courtesy for others’ via the manual guard spiel and signs still stuck up on board… The guard was not wearing one :) also I’m off to London and unfortunately for Sadiq forgot to bring any with me ;)

Ticket Inspections on DOO Services in East Anglia and in General.

Barriers are no substitute for revenue protection is probably why They don't care if I turn up at Leeds, buy a Burley Park single and then end up in Penzance but a ticket inspection on board would certainly raise an eyebrow!

Is it about time rail timetables returned to normal?

There are perhaps a number of issues with staffing -Sickness -Recruitment / Training (delays due to the pandemic) -Retention (perhaps not so much of an issue in the railway but e.g. bus drivers are an issue as many decided to jump to other driving jobs for a much better pay and less hassle)...

Minor things on trains which irritate you

When you sit down, plug your phone in and...nothing! It seems to be a common issue on the Harrogate (ex ScotRail) 170 stock in particular for some reason, where if you play musical chairs for a bit you will eventually find a working socket

Northern Service Reductions from 4th Jan 2022

So yesterday I found out the 09:33 Castleford - Leeds is one of the cut services (origin Knottingley), so I would have to catch the 09:03 instead (origin Sheffield), fine I'll bear that in mind for today ...and now this morning the 09:03 left Sheffield 24 minutes late so has seemingly decided...

27th January - Plan B easing - observations and usage

My friend set me a WhatsApp earlier ‘have you got a spare mask I’ve lost mine and Sainsburys still require them!’…I quickly corrected them on that assumption! No staff at the local Morrisons wearing masks…I was also at a venue the other night where the staff were rather happy they no longer had...

27th January - Plan B easing - observations and usage

In my local Sainsburys there were a couple of shelf edge labels stating 'You MUST wear a face covering unless exempt', they must have 'accidentally' forgotten to remove those so I assisted by removing them myself :D Felt like a half normal Friday night at Leeds station again, also I must give...

    LNER direct booking savings

Interesting as I'm pretty sure I booked it by just visiting lner.co.uk on my phone rather than actually using the specific LNER app!

Network Rail bets on mindfulness (and err...Greggs) to lure commuters back

Turns out the free Greggs and Costa Coffees are limited to a whopping 1,000 so that offer will be done and dusted by the end of this morning I reckon!

Network Rail bets on mindfulness (and err...Greggs) to lure commuters back

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60140862 The site isn't live until 6am but I'm not quite sure this is really going to be much of a help to entice commuters back somehow!

    LNER direct booking savings

Yes, it certainly 'fooled' me into thinking it was a LNER discount rather than some fancy split ticket action in the background that would encourage repeat booking via the LNER website Oddly I consider myself to be actually fairly switched on in terms of using tools such as split ticketing but...
