Why can't EMR trains cope with heat? (25 & 26 May)

Facebook (search Foxfield Railway) has more detail. Simply put: some of their volunteers, also 'big railway' staff in their full-time jobs, took water and assisted the situation in a remote location. Train broke down for three hours somewhere between Uttoxeter Signal Box (reported 1313) and...

Having been on a walk in the Peak District on the Bank Holiday (over 30 degrees), it was very nice indeed to walk into a Premier Inn room ready air-conditioned down to 21 degrees.

Wandered to Tesco early this morning whilst it was still cool. Virtually all of the fridges and freezers broken down and emptied. Fortunately the one thing I really wanted (milk) was still working. They store was fully refurbished with new 'doored' fridges and freezers last year.

With one exception I have always been charged the correct amount by both Premier Inn and Travelodge and always had the paperwork to follow. Even with multiple changes, refunds for stays at a lower rate and add-ons (payable on arrival) for stays at a higher rate. The one exception was where a...

I hadn't looked at the time period for Travelodge changes. Having been stung by the £10 change fee a couple of times I now always book TL at a flexible rate. The difference between Saver and Flexible rates is much less than similar options at Premier Inn. Paying the few £ extra for Flexible is...

Premier Inn can be moved multiple times, up to 18 months after the original stay date. I've moved a stay multiple times, just pushing it forward until there is a night at a suitable price at a convenient date. If you find a rebook at a cheaper rate you get a refund of the difference so, if it...

All the PI and TL I have stayed in have bedside lights, reachable from the bed and most also have a headboard light, reachable from just one side of the bed though.

I refused to pay and was allowed to book in. I stayed in a number of Ibis (all town/city centre) and Carlisle was the only one where I was asked for a deposit.

Chance for a new trivia thread. The Manchester Central Travelodge (not Central Arena AKA Strangeways View) is a former GPO/BT building. Rooms at the back have a scenic view into the exchange and there is a substantial, heavily barbed, fence on the roof between the two. The Shrewsbury town centre...

It's the sort of dubious practice engaged in by dodgy car rental companies. Totally invent a fault / damage after return by the customer then argue until the ends of time to avoid paying back the pre-authorised amount, deposit, whatever. Hoping the customer will a) not have any evidence and b)...

In which case £40 wouldn't even cover the cost of a new shower head, fitted and working! Plus they already had my details for any damage claim by me having paid in full in advance. It was an actual card payment, not an authorisation. The morning after I saw someone having a repayment made if I...

Smart Meters - after switch-off of BBC Radio Long Wave

Much the same as my meter. The arrow stopped switching between 'low' and 'normal' after the failed attempt to fit a smart meter. Now I'm paying the enhanced / higher Economy 7 daytime rate for all my supply 24/7 with no juice going into the storage heaters or hot water heater overnight. Rip-off...

Smart Meters - after switch-off of BBC Radio Long Wave

The distributor (National Grid ex Midlands Electricity) said much the same after having a good old poke around inside the meter cabinet. Resealed everything with their seals instead of the suppliers seals. Also identified a dead cable leading from the meter to the RTS box.

The Carlisle Ibis is the one that tried to charge me a deposit of £40 (not a card swipe, authorising an actual payment) even though I was fully paid up in advance. Telephone offices. If you look at the lift closely there is a floor 'missing' - used by another occupier accessed from the other...

Smart Meters - after switch-off of BBC Radio Long Wave

Over a month with no proper (Economy 7 rates) heating or hot water. Supplier said 'tails too short' to fit a smart meter, fetch the distributor out. Entirely predictably, distributor said 'tails fine' (and everything their side) fetch the supplier out. Waiting for a third appointment. Now I...

    The 'Rip Off Britain' discussion

The main supermarkets, for anything other than a basic flouride toothpaste. That is, the ones which purportedly stengthen, whiten, harden enamel, replace enamel, reduce sensitivity etc. Upto £80 per litre compared to Tesco Essentials Cavity Protection at £4.50 per litre and MacLeans Freshmint...

Toothpaste. In common with lots of personal care products. Despite there being multiple brands on the shelf most come from a very limited number of suppliers e.g. Unilever or Procter and Gamble. Not helped by the supermarket loyalty schemes offering a 'normal' price of £7.00 and a members...

I'm not suggesting it can be. Rather I was highlighting the issue of those people who do all their shopping in out of town retail parks then moaning about the death of the high street, as though the two are unconnected.

They prefer to buy all their food in one go from the supermarkets, and then wander around looking in charity shops and buying coffees.... moaning about how dead the town centre is, why doesn't the council do something to rejuvenate it, it's all coffee shops and charity shops nowadays!
