Trivia : shortest and longest time between stations

Can't remember the consensus last time around, but ones that usually get a mention include Blackfriars to City Thameslink, Penge West to Anerley and Hillington East to Hillington West, plus a couple in the Cardiff area I don't know.

Travelled on an advanced single a month in advance by mistake

I don't think that's odd, it's just the railway's fault for pushing people to split ticketing. The invalid ticket when they checked was London U1 to Milton Keynes, what tickets someone had before that should be irrelevant. That they were checked and incorrectly allowed is also the railway's...

Ticket inspectors and gateline staff sometimes not checking tickets properly or at all

How do these honest passengers (yourself, presumably) witness this? How can any passenger possibly know whether another passenger has (or needs) a ticket?

What would a dream future cross-country train be like?

It's not a splitting / joining train. The loco has to come from somewhere before the attachment, and it needs to go somewhere after detachment.

What would a dream future cross-country train be like?

The loco needs to go somewhere and come from somewhere.

Electric bikes - such a missed opportunity

I don't want any of these things to be subsidised.

What would a dream future cross-country train be like?

Was that wrong? It certainly took around that time for a loco swap at Crewe when that was how Euston to Holyhead was worked. Many guards would announce it and suggest people who wanted to have a smoke go on to the platform to do so.

ScotRail to introduce £10 minimum fare for those not buying before boarding

They really won't. It's an uncontroversial policy with no political significance.

LNR (WMT) ticket office at Euston to close

Coincidentally this thread had been closed since 2021.

    Class 700s Being 'Refreshed"

    This isn't true.

Delay repay eligibility (early departure, "on time" arrival)

You travelled on the 1553, so just put it in a delay repay claim for it. There's some terrible "advice" and over-thinking on this thread. It's completely irrelevant that you thought you might have travelled on a later service - you didn't. It's also completely irrelevant if you weren't waiting...

The Future of Pendolinos (Class 390): Post West Coast

Happy to oblige :D I agree, that seems most likely - where would want a long distance EMU that won't already have newer ones?

What does the railway do with under 18s in the event of severe disruption?

That's a meaningless thing for C2C to say, though. Completely unenforceable - nobody is checking a passenger's age before they board, and there's no law saying someone can't travel unaccompanied. You get this a lot though - "rules" written by someone based on what they think should be the case...

Does the UK have a "premier" main line?

This gets said on here every so often. It's a myth, though. The 390s are pretty much identical to every other Pendolino from the same era. I suspect the origin of the myth pre-dates this forum and is something inherited from the uk.railway newsgroup, which was full of anti-Branson rhetoric at...

Liverpool to Llandudno TfW 2 car trains on bank holiday

That looks like the edge of the toilet door on a 197 you'll have to force open after it's broken (probably nearing 50% chance) - another reason 2 car 197 services aren't acceptable. (We were told there was nothing to worry about before 197s were introduced - they'd usually run in pairs! People...

What does the railway do with under 18s in the event of severe disruption?

Sorry, but that's not accurate. Individual children without chaperones are driven to school in saloon taxis hired by councils.

ScotRail to introduce £10 minimum fare for those not buying before boarding

That's just an inevitable consequence of politicians introducing pointless concessions without asking how they'll be implemented.

Manchester Metrolink: how could it be improved?

Well it already has a colour system, it's just not used anywhere other than maps so is pointless. I don't think simply numbering routes would help. When you're stood at St Peter's Square and have a line of "3", "7", "2" approaching you, how is that better than what happens now? Croydon...

The Future of Pendolinos (Class 390): Post West Coast

Stick a couple of locos on them and they're ideal candidates to replace the Cardiff-Holyhead mk4s. Maybe resurrect the Manchester-Llandudno hauled train too for the services timed around Chester/Manchester commuting.
