The case for preserving a class 483...

Now that a decision has been made about the future of the Island Line, with D78s set to come in (as class 484), I'd like to make a case for saving one of the old units, as although they're old and non-standard, they do represent an important part of our railway history, having been the oldest...

Do narrower doors deter people trying to board the train before people have alighted?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/tpe-mark-5a-coaching-stock-progress.143579/ Once people get used to them, the end doors won't be much of an issue. In fact as TPE regulars don't seem to have ever got the hang of "let people off first", the narrow doors might stop...

    New stations around Wakefield?

Based on discussion in the Trans-pennine Route upgrade threads, but not wishing to distract from those core discussions, I've created this thread to discuss the possibility of new station(s) on the Huddersfield to Wakefield line. WYPTE in the past had campaigned for a station along this...

Why are Class 365s so popular?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/government-takes-ownership-of-class-365-fleet.189660 Never understood why the 365s are so popular among enthusiasts. Not fitting air-con was an oversight when they were new, and the high-density seating since they were last...

    TPE route disruption, Wed 31/07/19

In addition to the weather related disruptions elsewhere, signalling problems between Leeds and Dewsbury have decimated the evening peak service heading West out of Leeds. Several cancellations and delays of almost an hour on a handful of services. The 1649 to Huddersfield was showing 40 late at...

TPE route disruption (Huddersfield) Fri 24/05/19

Heading from Huddersfield into Leeds this afternoon and the station is rather chaotic with cancellations aplenty, apparently due to a signalling failure. Seems to be affecting all routes out of Huddersfield except towards Sheffield. A heads-up for anyone going that way, does anyone know what...

    Leeds Trams?

As we know, Leeds has long had ambitions for a tram/light-rail system, being one of the largest cities in Europe without one. The last time it was proposed was in the 2000s when preparatory works had begun before the project was scrapped, then there was the ill-advised trolleybus idea a few...

    61653's rubbish YouTube videos

I've decided to upload a few random short videos I'd been carrying around on my phone for months. Some of you will have seen the 68 clip as I posted it in the TPE Mk5a thread. I'll probably add to them at some point, but don't hold your breath! My channel can be found here. Apparently I'm...

    Nominative Determinism...

Following these two posts in the "Companies You Expect to Disappear Soon" thread, I'll take the suggestion of @Cowley and start a thread for people we've met or businesses seen with appropriately named owners or employees... One of the best I've seen is a funeral director on Bradford Road...

Passenger disturbance causes TPE cancellation (2J74 1754 Leeds to Huddersfield Fri 22/2)

The above service has been cancelled due to "disorder" presumably aboard the inbound service. Anybody know the details of this? Hopefully nobody has been hurt, and thoughts with the train crew having to deal with the incident. No signs of the Special Stop Orders that TPE promised would be used...

Trivia: Fewest livery changes in the lifetime of a fleet

It's been mentioned on a few threads about how "normals" have referred to a decently refurbished train (or even just a repainted one) as "new"... which got me thinking, has there been an example of stock which stayed in the same livery from introduction to withdrawal? Or failing that, which only...

    Eurostar 373 Diagrams?

Wasn't sure whether to put this here or in the international section, but the coin-toss has me here... I'm currently in the process of planning a trip to Barcelona by train, using the overnight train from Austerlitz to Latour-de-Carol which leaves Paris at 2104. As I understand it, some of the...

    Free Town and City Buses

Inspired by this quote: In this thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/coach-station-but-no-bus-station.169082/ Which towns and cities have free bus services operating? Some are expected (Manchester which I think has 3) whilst some are surprising (Dewsbury which is a ghost town, and...

    Trivia: PIS and signage fails

Wasn't sure if this should go in General Discussion as it is kinda trivial, but I've seen on a few errors on the PIS displays lately, particularly at Huddersfield. There was this on platform 8: That's not how I would spell "unfortunately"! There was also, above the first ticket window (which...

    Northern's "Promise to Pay" query

Much discussion has taken place about Northern's new Penalty Fares regime and in particular the "Promise to pay" vouchers available at card-only TVMs. This system (effectively a modern version of the Permit to Travel) may or may not throw up an issue for me, and I've been unable to find an...

    TPE new CIS

The new white LED PIS screens at Huddersfield have a redundant box on the left indicating the platform number, as a result only list the next 2 services rather than the next 3 as seen in the old ones. A backwards step imo. <(

    How small a fleet is a "micro-fleet"?

Something that comes up a lot in discussions on here is the issue of micro-fleets. It's been cited as an issue with the 230s (as they'd likely have very limited operating areas, so not many units needed) and with many other proposals... Yet BR at times didn't seem overly concerned about such...

Question regarding speed limits and combinations of stock with different speed limitations

That's the sort of thing that inspired my original question. I remember hearing talk of drivers in 158s forgetting that they had a 142 on the back, and hitting 90mph. One would hope for the driver's sake that there are ways of preventing such things, especially now that OTMR is in place.

    Mark E Smith of The Fall: 1957 - 2018

It has been announced that indie-rock legend Mark E Smith of cult Manchester band The Fall has died at the age of 60. Notoriously caustic in dealings with press, fans and bandmates alike, Smith carved out a legendary reputation during the 40-year lifespan of the band of which he was the only...

Trivia: Individual units/locos you have a like or dislike of... and why?

Apologies for the perhaps esoteric nature of this thread, but here goes... Inspired by a post in the Northern Unit Refurbishment thread, I wondered if anyone else has particular units they have a fondness or loathing for, and why. I don't make a habit of noting which unit I've travelled on...
