The Railways Bill - discussion about the legislation that will create Great British Railways

A service which is running DOO does not mean there are no staff on board to sell tickets. Depending on the area/line, the staff on board the DOO train may sell more tickets than on a guard worked service, since they have the time to sell tickets, instead of having to open and close doors every x...

Network Rail and blocwork announce new vision for Glasgow Queen Street Station development

It’s not that rare. There are atleast 5 or 6 booked Scotrail departures every weekday from Platform 1

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

My bespoke platform EV has a CoG only 10mm higher than my bespoke platform dedicated sports car, even though the EV is 300mm taller physically. There are things to not enjoy about with a performance EV vs a hot hatch, but EVs even when taller, keeping their weight within the wheelbase are miles...

    Class 93 Tri-mode Loco

I was on one of the cab rides of the 93. I guess there wasn’t any real opportunity for regen but I was surprised at how much battery was used on my run. Ended up using about 10% from both banks over the course of my trip

Introducing RailUK Tickets - support the forum when booking your rail tickets!

The sharing of E-Tickets, per passenger, is something we have on the back burner. I'm not sure when it will ship, but we are working away at doing it nicely. Sorry that isn't much use for now though

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

It's not based on size, it's based on vehicle classification. Perhaps rich people could afford to buy a petrol car made within the last 20 years, or a diesel car within the last 10 (or an EV) to get around the charge

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Saw them sitting at Nuneaton from my Avanti. Didn’t realise they were on the move, it was nice to see them out and about

All Customer facing railway staff should be trained to deploy wheelchair ramps?

Only the Driver should bee trained to deploy ramps. The ramp is only useful at a. station, where the train defacto has stopped. This means the driver has Nothing to do anyway, so they might as well deploy ramps and let Guards get on with their safety critical work

    Fishplate rail being welded together

I saw a bit of rail which caught my eye the other day, which was a bit of rail that looked like it had previously been (designed atleast to be) held together with fishplates, but was now welded together. What would be the reason for changing how the rails were attached, without replacing the...

Scotrail Long Term Out of Service

For runs like this, are driving duties handed over to a freight driver, or is a Scotrail driver who signs the class sent down to collect the train, and route conducted the whole way? Obviously no Scotrail driver will sign that route, but no freight driver will surely sign a 320 either

    PlusBus Tickets

I had a PlusBus ticket for the Glasgow area on Friday, and it didn't go smoothly at any point. Firstly tried it on a Stagecoach bus, which had no barcode scanner. Driver peered at it for a while but eventually let me on Next was on a McGills bus (local company bus managed to buy out Arriva so a...

Trivia: Platforms you cannot freely 'roam'

Would access to Peartree station in Derby be refused if there were no services due?

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

Not strictly true. The battery will be heated/cooled to its ideal temperature range if required. This uses more energy, and whilst the battery is not at it’s ideal temperature, the internal resistance of the battery is higher, so electrical output is lower (i.e. less range). You can of course...

    OHLE with no track underneath

I was passing through Stafford today, and noticed an old siding just north of the station, which looked as if the track had been lifted, but the OHLE above was all still in place. I’ve seen old gantries before above abandoned bits of railway land, but to still have the wires there stuck out to...

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

AIUI, Tesla (very intentionally) secured long leases for the spots their chargers take, back when EVs were a novelty, and owners of car parks though it was a nice little wheeze to make some money from otherwise unmonetised land. Now that EVs are more mainstream, and car parks have cottoned on to...

Train dispatched as I was pressing the button to open the doors

Why can’t they just invent a door that everyone agrees on how to close, and then put that door on the trains

Train dispatched as I was pressing the button to open the doors

Could the driver not simply close the doors instead? It may save enough time that this passenger could have boarded their train successfully

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

I stumbled onto a YouTube channel about a German lorry driver who now exclusively drives electric lorries, and who gives some detail about what it is like https://www.youtube.com/@electrictrucker The general gist is that, with some planning, he is able to time his regulated rest times with...
