Thameslink penalty fare for inadvertent failure to tap in

Although if everyone interprets the legislation in one specific way then the point is never going to get tested in court.

Thameslink penalty fare for inadvertent failure to tap in

I would speculate that it means that whoever wrote back to you referred to a higher authority for guidance. That may be higher as in their line manager, or it could be referring it to someone legally qualified - maybe a barrister or (if the railway think that the point is important enough) a KC...

    Uber ticketing

I can confirm that (at least for me, this morning) Tesco vouchers become Uber Money and are used by Uber to pay for train tickets.

Restriction 8A - restrictions on return leg?

Thank you. That's how I read it too. Which is a shame.

    Uber ticketing

I'm looking to use the Tesco version to pay for my commute tomorrow, so should be able to give a definite answer then. I have already found that - it takes a few minutes for the voucher to come through from Tesco to your email, and - Uber needs you to have set up an Uber money account to...

Restriction 8A - restrictions on return leg?

Historically, there have been some very good value first class fares priced by TfW. Looking at one of these and trying to understand the restrictions which are now in place, I see that restriction 8A applies. BR Fares.com gives this as While the National Rail site says much the same, only...

Help with potential prosecution on Elizibeth line

As you seem to have been away for a generation, I think you will need to treat the UK as a foreign country where you don't know the rules. Just like any foreign country, please make an effort to find out what locals do so that you don't inadvertently offend against local customs.

    Do TOCs read the Forum?

We do occasionally hear of responses from train companies which appear to be informed by what has been on this list - but almost without exception, the response is positive and disclosing facts here has done no harm, and may have done good. (Edit - for completeness, in the original thread I...

Letter received from XC alleging £10,000 of unpaid fares

In view of what has been disclosed, my personal view is beginning to move to think that the OP might be well advised to pay for a solicitor and discuss things with them in more privacy.

fare dodgers and GDPR - what are the TOCs actually allowed to do?

On a rough and ready basis, it's perhaps worth noting that EU GDPR came in in 2018, and (as I understand it) became UK GDPR with few changes at the start of 2021. I would have thought that if there was a viable challenge to databeing held for the prevention of crime, we'd have seen it by now...

Are my tickets valid in this situation?

I think actually whether you have a separate ticket to Carlisle is in fact a red herring on this occasion. The National Rail incident page (https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service-disruptions/penrith-20251103/) currently says (in part) So I think that you would be entitled to use the Northern...

Are my tickets valid in this situation?

If Avanti have told you that they're valid, then take that note with you and I would expect you would be OK. Do you have one through ticket (i.e. Wetheral to London) or do you have split tickets? If you have a through ticket, then that makes the argument even easier.

I think the OP is ahead of us there - see paragraph 7 of post #1.

    Stockport to London Commute

Since per BRFares.com a monthly season from Stockport to Euston is £476.80, might that be the ticket - by my sums just shy of £53 per day for 9 days (source: https://www.brfares.com/!fares?orig=SPT&dest=EUS&period=20250907). Just because all of OP's travel is within 3 weeks, there's nothing...

    Advice needed

Welcome to the forum. I don't think this is something we've seen before, but my first question would be what you think you paid for twice. You appear to have bought a train fare that you weren't entitled to use, and then a penalty fare which will have covered your travel to ( at least) the...

How can the proposed Old Trafford development be served by rail?

If I have understood this thread (and many others, and a little personal observation) the problem appears to be congestion over Castlefield Junction. So unless the shuttles were to terminate at MU Halt, they would presumably get as caught up crossing the junction as much as any other service.

Fine for invalid ticket because route was booked backwards.

While I think we all agree that the ticket was valid (because there's nothing wrong with throwing away the outgoing leg of a return ticket and only making the return trip), it seems to me that the problem is that all 3 appeal opportunities have been used without the railway understanding this...

Settlement offer over a year after the incident

I think that you can take this at face value: they're looking at your case, and for the moment there's no payment deadline. So if anything it's good news in that they're not (yet) taking you to court. It's not such good news that they've already decided not to take you to court - but that's a...
