    Caledonian Sleeper

Serco have lost tens of millions operating the Caledonian Sleeper (and will do over the course of the franchise whatever happens down the line) - but please don't let facts get in the way of your rant. The only people who benefit financially are the passengers who actually pay less than half of...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Thanks for the write-up. The room moves are usually due to technical issues with the berths or to get (for example) families together if they’ve had to be moved from elsewhere. It’d be unusual for you to be bumped simply because someone else asked for a more central room.

8 coaches to INV 6 coaches to FTW (incl. the 2 added at Waverley) 4 coaches to ABD (running as ECS) So "as normal". 1634392277 The only permanent arrangement is for GBRf to provide traction to get the services from A to B (and C and D). The 73/9s were designed with AAR multi so that they...

No - two different turns (which also include the respective Polmadie/Edinburgh ECS moves).

If the Edinburgh portion loco (92038) has failed, then realistically the split cannot happen so the train has to go as a Load 16 to either Glasgow or Edinburgh. As I understand it a Load 16 can fit in Glasgow, but only in one Platform (11?) and causes issues when the ECS loco goes on (beyond...

John Smith would also love to know where all these spare 66s are too, as there certainly aren't any in the GBRf fleet.

    Caledonian Sleeper

Absolute nonsense. 92s are the only locos for the job and will be going nowhere other than on the front of the Mk5s. There’s no other locos capable and Caledonian Sleepers (who they run under) is a TOC, not a FOC. To elaborate further and hopefully to put an end to the wild speculation...

    Caledonian Sleeper

The 73/9s were designed and built with AAR multi so they could work with 66s (and anything else with AAR). It wasn't an accident...!

Think you're forgetting EWS / DB were the traction providers in ScotRail days - so would've been their control fulfilling the role GBRf control perform now. The comparison should be between ScotRail Control and CS Control (Service Delivery Managers).

The seated coaches also contain the main TCMS (computer) for the Mk5s and you can't run two adjacent to each other in a rake. And even if you can keep the warring 150xx apart, they still don't like it much if another one is "unexpectedly" in the rake in an "unusual" position.

    Caledonian Sleeper

They're GBRf's locos, not CS's. The 73/9s were designed to work with 66s as another valid traction option. It is not an issue or something "wrong" when a 66 is being used to provide the extra grunt on the Inverness portion (usually). GBRf's job is to get the beds from A to B (and C, D and E)...

    Caledonian Sleeper

It's Load 7 currently, which is far from the limit of a single 73/9. A single 73/9 has hauled Load 8 and its dead mate over the HML a number of times without anyone really noticing - and that's 120 tonnes more. Single 73/9s regularly work Load 6 over the WHL without any bother. A solo 73/9...

    Locomotive Services Fleet (LSL) updates

It's really as simple as it not being operational currently (as we know) and LSL are currently working hard on it with the aim of it being on that tour. However, with something like a Deltic (and bearing in mind there is only one it can be) they're rightly hedging their bets should things not...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Good job it's a sleeper service then...! And on a Bank Holiday weekend when folk are most likely travelling for leisure not work or to get from A to B as fast as possible (if so, they're on the wrong mode of transport). Loco's don't switch ends - the trains work into Euston double-headed as...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Belongs to Eastern Rail Services (ERS) who are based there: Eastern Rail Services They bought all the Mk2s from Serco a year or so before they were taken out of service on the Beds, then leased them back to Serco. ERS also then picked up a few Mk3s when Porterbrook were selling them. Since...

Check the service alterations page on the Sleeper.Scot website (link below) as that lists the up-coming changes to schedules - it'll usually say which services are being diverted and you can then work out where (broadly) due to it saying which stations the service isn't calling at (e.g. if...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Not stopping at Crewe is an operational decision made late on sometime between 20:00 (when bookings close) right up to when 1S25 has already been sat at Crewe South Junction waiting for 20 minutes for the pesky TfW units to get out of Platform 6. Going non-stop through Crewe (or Preston for...

it costs what it costs - running that many locos, stock, crew etc with relative low capacity costs money. Sleepers are expensive to operate - why is that “ripping someone off”?
  20. TimboM

    Caledonian Sleeper

Passenger ticket income on the sleeper covers <40% of the costs of running the service. There’s very few things you can get these days where you pay less than half the cost of you having that product or service. Hardly a rip-off.
