    St Neots

I ended up in Offord. Forgot how varied the ECML is, compared to the WCML. So far in 45 mins, we've had 2xgner hst's, 5xgner 91's (in various colour schemes),1xFCC 365, 3x FCC 317's (both body shapes), 1xGC HST, and 1 GC 180. Still wish it was 31's, 45's, 47's and 55's with the occasional DMU...

I'm off to St Neots today. Is there anywhere nearby the railway that would be suitable for a picnic?

    Previous Big Electrification Schemes

I doubt that they'd have had much of a cab at the blunt end at all. Maybe a small shunting cab for depot movements, but it's all speculation

    Previous Big Electrification Schemes

I should have said non-passenger. The up workings would be headed by the dvt, with the 91 pushing.

    Previous Big Electrification Schemes

Locos the preferred option due to their ability to pull other stuff, i.e. freight. Before toc's and foc's started hacking the network into pointless (and artificial) chunks, it wasn't uncommon to see the same loco going one way with freight at 05.30, and back with passengers at 15.30. That is...

    High Speed Two (HS2) discussion

Ah, get over it. HS2 will still be doing what it does when airfares and cars become hideously expensive. Think of it as an investment in future proofing our infrastructure. When the M1 and M6 were built, the massive outlays for the amount of traffic they saw would have been seen as ridiculous...

Seeing the stored 508s at Eastleigh

When the 508's joined the 507's on merseyside, all of the MU's saw use for nearly 30 years. Now, with a bunch of them sitting idle down south, does this mean merseyrail run less services now. As far as I can see, they have more route miles these days than they did in the 80's. Any explanations?

How about another couple of new(ish) builds

I'd broadly agree with you, although, as you say, with paths becoming limited, something like a 309 with its 100mph capability would fit into modern schedules better than, say, a mainline registered class 25. I'm not giving up hope just yet!

How about another couple of new(ish) builds

As someone who grew up being carted into London on first gen AC EMU's, would it be feasable/possible to rebuild mk1/2 coaches to sit in for the missing trailers on some of the EMU's at Coventry? What I'd really like is a 304, but since all trace of their existence (including their trampoline...

    split-flap display destination boards

I'm with yew. As soon as the merest hint of sunlight hits the led's, you can't see a thing.

    split-flap display destination boards

Note to mod who changed thread name. I liked the term flappy destination board, but if you insist on the change, then who am I to argue. How did they actually work?

    split-flap display destination boards

Just wondering, are they all gone now? I remember the one at euston, which was a masterpiece of 60's technology! Bit of a shame if they're all gone, as I'm sure they're not really suitable for preservation.

    Could PPMs replace Pacers?

If you are looking for a viable situation to use ppm's, you are looking for relatively short, isolated lines, just like the Stourbridge branch. As well as that, you need fairly low passenger numbers, and lines where squeaky wheels aren't going to become an issue. To be honest, one or another...

    Peaks - 44/45/46s

As soon as it happens, I'd like to be there. The noise from that engine is only behind a whistler and a deltic. Had my head out the window on the GCR not that long ago. It was magnificent. I remember stopping of at whitemoor yard in March to see 30 or more of them rusting away in the late...

    Tilting diversions

Seems excessively slow. The speed limit always used to be 60. I remember seeing the old cast metal sign. Used to love early mornings down the mill with my dad and the dog. D/H 86's, 47's and 25's on freight. Even better when the main line was 'coming through'. Quite how my dad ever managed to...

    Western Question

Please bear with my hypothetical side on this one; If the westerns (class 52) had not been considered too non-standard to continue, how easy would it have been to convert them for electric train heating? Would it have been a job like the 31/4's, where 200hp was robbed from the engine...

    Tilting diversions

Shame. The curve heading through Kingsthorpe mill, heading north from Northampton always used to look ace with a rake of mk3's doing 60, so a pendo tilting would have been just super
  19. I

    Pretendalino

It is an old rake of mk3 coaches with a dvt on the end. It is usually haulled by a 90, on loan to VT. it is painted in similar colours to a pendo, and at a glance, through trees, would probably get mistaken for one. Afaik, it only sees regular use on a Friday. Many people more 'in the loop' will...

    Tilting diversions

Just drove past the Northampton loop of the WCML. It seems the main line is on the loop today, as I saw a pendolino slinking into hunsbury tunnel. It got me wondering, do they tilt anywhere on the Northampton loop? I know at one time, there was at least one pendo per day which was diagrammed to...
