Rail Freight Flows and News UK

20+ years ago at a regional level, there was a considerable trade in exchanging paths to move special traffic. As long as Red / Green / Blue companies felt they were getting what they needed there was no problem. Most phone calls/e-mails started with "Will you need 6--- from A to B of date xx...

Two holiday coach companies have gone bust..Impact on heritage lines?

More a comment of "oh s***" from heritage railway finance managers!

    Track construction ballast depth

Yes a good point about LNER overweight express locos. However A3 and A4 class were not normally seen between Eastleigh and Salisbury. S15's did their bit on rolling out the substructure. RA9 is 23.0 to 24.1 tonnes in modern standards

Long term social distancing: Impact on public life & public transport?

I think part of the government message has been lost, mainly by the media - who often can't comprehend complex ideas. As far as I can remember, the two metre "rule" was for when you stopped and talked to someone else. Was there ever a recommendation about a distance for walking or cycling past...

    Leyland National Maximum Speed

On the early mark 1's I thought the speed limit was when the drivers sense of self preservation kicked in. ( Thinking of the comment up thread about how badly they rolled. Yes - about 25mph on some country roads with reverse camber and crumbling tarmac....)

    Track construction ballast depth

A "skim" renewal is 300mm deep from finished ballast top / sleeper tops. A "deep dig" is 600mm normally done where the ballast is contaminated and therefore the sort of location which would have blanketting. This gives some idea of the ground conditions at the bottom of a "deep dig", top soil...

Govenment Briefing 23rd May - Reversing Beeching Cuts

Local press item about Devizes. https://www.gazetteandherald.co.uk/news/18471454.devizes-wins-government-cash-train-station-project/ Lydeway that is quoted in the article is just beyond where the A342 crosses the Berks & Hants. So it's a parkway station to the west of the old junction for...

The third North Downs standard pattern service is in the WTT from December.

What purpose does 1st class serve? Should it be replaced with a ‘business class’?

Back in the day, maybe 30 years ago 1st class staff privilege travel was one of the perks to entice senior clerical/supervisory staff to apply for management jobs. To be honest, apart from leg room, there wasn't much difference apart from pre 1970's stock.

Trivia: stations that were always too big for their traffic

Remember that 100 years ago, fixed formation trains were very unusual outside intensive suburban networks. There would be parcels and milk vans to attach and detach as well as horseboxes, the occasional hearse (Privs were available!), Special Cattle Vans and fish vans. Trains would be...

Why were SWR's suburban routes not extended to support 12 car trains?

I think I heard that the BRB Property board sold the freehold of the Red Lion sometime in the late 1980's along with a fair bit of Lower Marsh.

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

I think it was a requirement in the franchise agreement to retraction the 442's. A costly but easy promise. Any delay can be put down to "technical problems" and hopefully the DfT would know enough not to question. Much of the noise isn't the electric motor, it comes from the the final drive...

Why were SWR's suburban routes not extended to support 12 car trains?

Not that close due to the strength or lack of in the arches under the platform area. The arches under the concourse and General Offices have a wider span than those under the tracks. Below road level there were three underground lines at different level and alignments which would make piling...

    Trivia: Shortest speed restriction

Agreed, PSR's are not published in the WON, but can be created in PPS for time lost calculations in connection with engineering works planning. TSR's are created in PPS for inclusion in the WON. Then there are some TSR's which have been there so long (Basingstoke Up Fast / Down Reading) they are...

Like air traffic control at key junctions...

Some "odd" movements are planned for route knowledge or ensuring points are swung at least once per day to keep them working for the time they might be needed in a hurry. PSUL published by the Branch Line Society saves a lot of trawling through RTT or working timetables.

    Trivia: Shortest speed restriction

That is because PPS (Possession Planning System) won't accept the start and end mileage as being the same.

If BA leaves Gatwick, could this be the end of GTR's 'Gatwick Express' route?

Wh Which is what was done for many years until the loco hauled Gatwick Express service was launched in about 1982. When we're allowed out again, try Belgian or Dutch local services, they have regular portion working.

    Steam Locos and Turntables/ Wyes

Norton Fitzwarren, Churston and Yeovil Jn are on private railway infrastructure and need separate access agreements in addition to NWR. Also St Philips Marsh it technically a double ended private siding, so needs agreement from GWR. I think to use Hawkeridge Curve as part of the triangle...

    Steam Locos and Turntables/ Wyes

The track is there, but the signalling isn't without going to into Charing Cross or Cannon St to reverse. Then there are the axle weight restrictions between Waterloo East and Hungerford Bridge ( RA4 ) which effectively precludes loco hauled workings. Any loco hauled engineering trains in that...
