    LU Water refill at stations

All those facilities are all commercial arrangements if you look at it - the photo booth own no doubt gets charged rent by TFL, the ATMs contracted to note machine (formerly run by HSBC) etc. I think the challenge will be trying to get the drainage, plumbing and electrics as well as a location...

Future of Ticket Office Consultations launched

I think the reason why it works in other countries are that the tickets sold in other outlets are very simple - like one way journeys, a carnet book of 10 tickets, travelcard. Simple enough to just for the shopper to request I want ticket type X and for the shopkeeper to hand over the item and...

Future of Ticket Office Consultations launched

Any organisation's IT if they're any good should have a stock of rolling spares to ensure that there is no/least disruption caused by faults. As for the person in this thread asking for surcharges, I have go all McEnroe on you and say you cannot be serious! Do you honestly think that the ticket...

TfL Contactless card shows no journey data on account

My understanding is that whilst the "backend" is clever enough to work out your journeys at the end of the day and charge the appropriate fare, it isn't intelligent enough to link different devices/physical cards together. Unless, of course, this technology has now improved? So it will see your...

TfL Contactless card shows no journey data on account

Are you using the physical card to travel with, and register online? Or are you registering your physical card online but using another device (phone, watch etc) to tap in with? The devices all have a different virtual card number that is linked to your physical card.

EMR issues warning regarding e-tickets and dead phone batteries

Part of the problem is that sellers always seem to default to etickets. Most people do not bother to change the default settings, and so are at the mercy of having their phones charged/working etc. I found this when I bought tickets via the LNER website, with a fresh account to bag some Amex...

Could a new political party in power, reverse bus decline ?

The TFL model bus is quite good - it enforces quality to a degree, encourages efficency. Flat charging at £1.75 per ride, the one hour hopper fare (if you switch buses within the hour you don't pay another fare), a cap per day to the max travelcard / bus pass fare. With the local buses round...

Things you don't see in trains any longer

Comfortable seats. The ones aboard the slam door trains were very comfortable.

Lighting quality on trains: are you bothered?

I think peak good taste lighting was on modern trains was the Southeastern Electrostars circa 2008ish on the longer distance routes into Kent. Gentle and diffused enough to be not jarring when on a late night journey, yet there was the option for a reading light above the seat if you needed a...

    LU/Elizabeth Line 4G update

The wifi provider has definitely changed, I noticed the other day that the ISP on the LU Wifi is now Cogent Communications rather than VM and the speed is cut down considerably. Virgin were definitely more generous with the speeds. I was connecting via the 3UK encrypted SSID.

    Are station heating costs significant?

I noticed a heater in the waiting room in Hounslow East that looked like it was a relic from the 80s, all wood effect but still kicking out heat. I guess they built them to last and so don't replace them for decates, but surely modern heaters would have better efficiency? Do TFL buy...

London Tube - Paying by Contactless Issues

This is because Google/Apple pay uses a virtual card number that is linked to but completely separate to your physical card PAN. To a merchant it appears as a different card number to that of your physical one. The virtual card number is never shown fully (unless you happen to get a merchant...

London Tube - Paying by Contactless Issues

I would probably stick to using your physical card over using Google pay for contactless on public transport. From casual observation I have noticed a lot of the double beeps in buses and tubes are people using cards loaded to their phones - perhaps they are not unlocked/properly set...

    Tickets machines and Querty keyboards

I collected tickets yesterday from the machine and had no problems with using the QWERTY keyboard on the screen. Years ago SWR installed film over the top of the screens that made the key presses difficult and you had to jab at the onscreen keys quite hard. For most (if not all) people who...

    Abellio management buy-out

Your "trading as" name can always be separate to your legal company name, however, you must always declare the latter which is why it is always on the foot of the website, side of the bus etc.

Poor quality passenger rail service increases demand for private car purchases

A lot of jobs that can be done remotely do not need travel to the office five days a week anymore. I myself am only a few days in and generally it is for face to face meetings and catching up with colleagues in person. On the strike days this week I was in a coffee place around my home town, it...

How have First Group/MTR handled The South Western Franchise compared to StageCoach?

I have always wondered upon travelling on the SWR 450s and 444s why the filthy air conditioning vents were never cleaned as standard? It seems a bit of an oversight even before covid, as it shows poor attention to detail both in presentation, hygiene for passengers (since the carriage is sealed...

Trivia: Significant gaps in mobile coverage (and wifi) on the rail network.

I used to travel a lot to Portsmouth about 10 years ago by train and found the most consistent network along the Portsmouth direct line was Vodafone, especially as you got towards that section in between Petersfield and the tunnel, it was Vodafone only and even then it was 2G and you could just...

It appears all TVMs on SWR are broken.

You would have thought it would have been programmed in some sort of no today ticket sales mode, but a large collect-only and future travel button(s) to enable such functions. Something like: There are currently no trains departing this station today, so buying tickets for today is...

    Are wheelbarrows/carts allowed on trains?

I remember seeing some wheelie bins being left on a train, the lids were locked and there was a label on the top indicating it was lost property from station X to London Waterloo.
