Correct with the locos. A very good poster is regularly updating the position on the thread quoted below.
Chiltern MK5s Starting 2026 (non speculative updates thread)
Hope that helps.
In a compartment behind the driver's cab at the number 1 end there is a mode switch to select between:
SERV: driving from the locomotive
TRAIL: driving from the DT (Mk5A) or DVT (Mk3)
AESS: auto engine start/stop
SOS: emergency circuits only
0: main loco systems disconnected
When operating...
Unfortunately with the Mk5As there isn’t the flexibility you mentioned. Due to the onboard systems, Mk5A is effectively a five coach unit with a loco attached.
Back in BR days, 5 coaches was quoted as the break even point at which it became financially worthwhile to use a loco rather than...
Thank you as always for all of your efforts.
As I understand it, after the press run on 1R90 the Class 68/Mk5A set is due to run to Stourbridge Junction Depot on:
3J90 1421 Birmingham Moor Street to Stourbridge Jn Depot
(achieved via a reversal at Dorridge)...
29.09.2025
68019/TP03
5Q32 1446 Long Marston to Longsight T.M.D. (D) which will terminate at Crewe South Yard
30.09.2025
68019/TP03
5Q32 1018 Crewe South Yard-Longsight TMD (D)
Hope that helps:)
Great job with all the info, I’m enjoying your posts.
Three small corrections though:
68031 Brush Loughborough
(arrived on 26.09.2025 on 0M99 1250 Wembley LMD to Loughborough, dragged by 37884).
68025 Carlisle Kingmoor TMD
(Arrived 26.09.2025 on 0Z68 1202 Stoke Marcroft-Carlisle Kingmoor...
No, that’s not correct, though I’m unwilling to engage further since it will take the thread off topic. Maybe you could start a new thread if you wished to discuss it further?
Information on the Chiltern Railways website under the section ‘What are the benefits for customers on other routes (e.g. Oxford, Stratford upon Avon, Aylesbury)?’
“These newer trains will deliver more reliable journeys on our route between London and the West Midlands. This will free up our...
As I understand it, the loco hauled diagrams are changing from the December 2025 timetable (where the Mk5A sets are being phased in).
The morning ‘peak’ trains with loco haulage will be:
1H08 0545 Birmingham Moor Street-Marylebone (Banbury 0639)
1H25 0815 Birmingham Moor Street-Marylebone...
I should have worded things more precisely to ‘half hourly throughout the day’. North bound Marylebone to Birmingham the gaps are:
0807, 0902
1002, 1102
1202, 1302
2102, 2202
I can see what you are saying regarding the peak services, though it is possible that some of them might remain in the...
Crewed by Leeds or King’s Cross drivers.

I don’t think there have been any electric trains round there for quite some time.
1756112360
I think that wouldn’t be possible due to time constraints and route knowledge, the intention is to use Leeds or King’s Cross drivers.
The diagrams are still subject to change, particularly the one involving Newcastle. There’s a problem with where to put the train during the layover at Newcastle.
Oh, of course, (almost) anything is possible, with enough money.
As it is, Chiltern are already receiving a huge increase in the number of vehicles they are being allowed to lease. It would be surprising to see additional Mk5A stock ordered, when thoughts are already turning to a Class...
The problem with the Mk5A sets is that reforming them into longer rakes always results in having some vehicles left over.
I suspect that half hourly Marylebone to Birmingham will be introduced in December 2026.
Something doesn’t quite add up though if you are correct about:
Chiltern have...
