I was thinking that my new bi-modes would be taking over double-set commuter 156 services, but 155 replacement perhaps not a priority
I was thinking additional 319s would have been the original plan, revised to all the 323s and perhaps 365s or 379s once it became clear that they were available...
I think I would have gone for an all bi-mode, commuter-spec (relatively high-density seating, perhaps like 707s with wide central aisle for standing and/or some areas of 3+2), doors at thirds with large standbacks, fast acceleration, with gangway doors. This would then allow the 170s and 158s to...
I do think its a shame that there isn't a consistent option to be able to easily register an e-ticket to an email address, so that in the unlikely event that a phone runs out of battery / gets lost / disolves in a flood of condensation from a poorly fitting window, it would be possible to give...
It would seem more likely that the Lancaster service would be extended to these stations if an HS2 service to them was needed. Alternatively the second Liverpool could have another portion detach at Crewe, rather than use the extra path.
There is a simple solution to the ban on extending 3rd rail - simply fit the D-trains with small nuclear reactors. Zero carbon footprint, and probably just as likely to ever see light of day as any extension on the IOW :)
True, but its presumably all a balance. When there used to be Plymouth - London flights, I sometimes used them to connect at Gatwick, but when they were poorly timed I would get the train or drive.
HS2 could also capture some of the connecting air market, as it is likely to mean a reduced choice of connecting flights. If there are (normal world) say 10 BA flights per day from Edinburgh - Heathrow, and 33% of that capacity is used for connections, 33% is for people who transfer to rail...
I wonder if there is any that a fail-safe electronic system could be put in place. I'm imagining something like an app on the workers' phones, that monitors their GPS position, and alarms (sound/vibrate/flashing light) when a train is approaching a signal section that runs within X meters to...
Something like this app could be a great way to deal with reasonableness. It would be fairly simple to write a set of 'reasonableness' rules for a piece of software to decide if the current level of delay for your journey is reasonable, and then allow it to re-route you, with the confirmation...
Really, no!
The BML needs to have entirely full-length trains that are not carrying fresh air. Combining all the GatEx services into express Brighton or other services seems like by far the best solution. Half hourly airport services really isn't good enough, they should be turn up and go...
Is demand for the lowland sleeper likely to reduce once HS2 Phase 2b is up and running? Especially if improvements are also made on the north WCML. Faster journey times from Glasgow and Edinburgh would make an earlier arrival in London practical with a not too antisocial start from Scotland...
I always think that reasonable risk is a combination of likelihood, consequence and also benefit. This is why it could be considered more reasonable to cycle to the station, which has a greater likelihood of harm, but provides significant benefit (exercise, low cost travel etc), compared with a...
I was thinking go from Bromley town centre (not Bromley South) down Church Road, Glassmill Lane, Queensmead road and station road around the open space, calling at Shortlands Station, then either an extra track alongside the railway alignment to Beckenham Junction, or along Abermarle Street. I...
Would it make sense to extend it to Beckenham Junction or Elmers End and link it to the Croydon system? Although it would be too far for long through journeys from Thamesmead to Wimbledon, journeys like Eltham to Croydon could be useful, and a single network might make things like depots...
I believe that one of the biggest constraints on HS2 capacity is the capacity of Euston Station and its throat. Looking at the plans for Old Oak Common (OOC) Station, with its 6 HS2 platforms, it occurred to me that it might be straightforward to terminate some trains here.
With good onward...
