    Torquay Station

Looks nicely sympathetic to the original station, a very nice design.

One Or Multiple City Centre Stations In Provincial English Cities?

I agree completely. If starting completely from scratch, yes, I think I would go for a single London station as far as possible, but it would obviously be a little more complex than that. I would go for a crossrail / S Bahn / Thameslink approach for outer and inner suburban rail - basically...

One Or Multiple City Centre Stations In Provincial English Cities?

I agree that because of the development of the cities, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow are not really practical to combine the stations, but in an ideal world, I see no advantage of them being separate. To take Birmingham, for example, the New Street lines run directly under Moor Street. In...

Branding that sticks in your mind?

It still seems like more people in the South West refer to XC services as Virgin than Cross Country, and are surprised when you correct them. A very impressive piece of branding to still be referred to 14 years after the end of a 10 year franchise.

One Or Multiple City Centre Stations In Provincial English Cities?

I'd suggest a 4th /5th option. I think for many cities a single 'interchange' Station where every service from every direction calls would be ideal. However, this is likely to be away from the city centre. Therefore, having one or more additional city centre stations on individual lines, where...

Proposal for replacement swing bridge at Trowse, Norwich

One of my favourite books! I love the descriptions of the typical disasters of mud hopping sailing! It was Haddiscoe swing bridge, on the Great Yarmouth - Beccles line, which closed to passenger traffic in 1959.

Beeching Plan 2021: roads to close

I know the op was originally in jest, but ripping up long distance roads is pretty pointless, the environmental damage of building them is already done, and the ongoing cost of maintenance is low. I would love to see a programme of road closures in town centres, however - more pedestrianised...

Class 484 replacing class 483 on the island line: progress updates

Looks like a good solution. No point in wasting money.

Suez Canal blockage, and should a new diversionary canal be built?

Much like diversionary railways, a diversionary canal would be very unlikely to be able to pay for itself on that basis, after all this is the only closure of the canal since the suez crisis. I could see the logic in increasing the amount of 'duel carriageway' canal. About 30km at each end is...

    South-West - Bristol - Manchester HS2

Not really any different to the current need to match paths north and south of new street though. We looked at it on a thread a year or so ago and I think there was room for a 3rd track out as far as a branch to the Camp Hill lines, so if the southern platforms were used for XC type services...

    South-West - Bristol - Manchester HS2

My reply was to a post that suggested that XC style trains could run on HS2 to Calvert or OOC, and then branch off onto the GWML to Bristol. My point was this would take a path that is needed for a London service. North of Birmingham, there is space on HS2, as it would just be a case of...

Suez Canal blockage, and should a new diversionary canal be built?

Good Hope is an awful lot shorter for Asia to Europe than Cape Horn. The fees for both canals are carefully set to be slightly cheaper than the alternative - the fuel cost for the extra distance, plus the extra time (so more ships needed for the same frequency) means that the the canal is...

    South-West - Bristol - Manchester HS2

Yes, there really are no spare train paths. The final phase 2b plan uses all of them, and all very sensibly too, there is nothing obvious to drop. But also, if you are doing all the work you suggest, why do 2 sides of the triangle, rather than taking the train off HS2 tracks at Birmingham, where...

    Pacer flattens gates at Dereham

I really don't think that a railway can just pass the buck like that though. Fine to get the contractor to make the detailed plans, but surely someone on the railway would want to check them, and equally, the railway presumably would have chosen that site for the transfer, which to my lay eyes...

Suez Canal blockage, and should a new diversionary canal be built?

A forty foot wide train would certainly be impressive... Realistically I can't imagine it would be practical building a rail line to that gauge from Asia to Europe. And the delays of transhipping would mean there would be no point in building a short line across suez, given the canal already exists.

Suez Canal blockage, and should a new diversionary canal be built?

It would need to be decided before coming through Singapore, but I'm certain that the discussion is being had in shipping companies worldwide. Even if the ship is freed this evening, the backlog will still take a long time to clear, so diverting ships that haven't yet left Asia may make sense...

Worst Ferry Crossing you’ve been on?

The Spirit class were never used on the Western Channel, though there was a crazy idea to use the Pride of Bruges on a Portsmouth - Channel Islands route in a P&O bid to take over from Condor. You would have been on the Pride of Cherbourg or Hampshire, ex Viking Venturer /Valiant from Townsend...

Suez Canal blockage, and should a new diversionary canal be built?

As a shipping man, I do love the rail based solutions being suggested by everyone on here. As others have pointed out, this one ship is carrying enough containers to fill a train more than half the length of the canal! You may as well use 442s to carry them all. There are some flows where the...

    South-West - Bristol - Manchester HS2

Trouble is that there is no capacity south of Birmingham International - any XC train going south of there will use a London path.
