When I was a growing up in Sheffield in the late 70s/early 80s we'd very occasionally have a driver change inside the bus garage on Herries Road.
(More usually in the lay-bys immediately outside though!)
They didn't when I caught it. It arrived into the Manchester bound platform and departed straight back out towards Bradford.
It was running late, and made up most of the late running by doing so.

However the two conductors I encountered told me they couldn't sell them, so buying on the train isn't something I'd advise anyone to rely on.

(Related, but off topic: I travelled from Halifax to Chester direct on 29 May this year on a day when Halifax station had no electricity due to a fire in a nearby mill and so the ticket office was closed. Both conductors on the train...
You can also buy SY Connect+ (and all the other PTE day tickets) on the First bus app.
It's a great idea; I wish they'd use the same integration in West Yorkshire for the DaySaver (ex-MetroDayRover) tickets too...

I did, indeed, forget to mention the other reason for 'Standby' is so that I can refund the tickets if I need to and as I'm travelling with two other people this is a useful safeguard.
You are correct - the tickets are just 'Single' tickets...
I have booked a ‘Sailrail Standby Single’ from Halifax to Dublin Ferryport (and in reverse) and I have conflicting information about the reservations required for the rail part of my journey.
The reason I book ‘Standby’ is that according to the ticket restrictions on the Virgin Trains website...
